X-Press celebrates 25 years
Twenty-five years ago a bloke named Joe Cipriani came up with an idea: “let’s start a rather nifty little magazine and give it away free.” 25 years on, X-Press magazine remains Australia’s largest and most successful street press publication, informing Perth folk every week and how and where to boogie.
“X-Press has truly become a part of WA’s cultural fabric,” said Cipriani. “Long Friday lunches, The Sunday Times hurtled at your door on Sunday, takeaway Tuesdays and X-Press hitting the streets every Thursday. Some of life’s pleasures are pretty damn simple.”
In Thursday’s edition, X-Press celebrates 25 golden years with a bumperCollector’s Edition magazine, reflecting on a quarter of a century offun and frivolity.
“Music, art, fashion, film, opinion – X-Press has made a fine art ofdoing things a little differently. Rock stars, film darlings, whackoartists – we’ve been up there amongst the best (and worst) of them, bringing good news to the streets of Perth week in, week out with asmile and a bevvy in hand. We’ve encouraged you to ‘X-Perience’, ‘X-Plore’and ‘X-Press’.”
“Thanks for the memories Perth – some of them are hazy, but we rememberthe good ones. And we’ll see you out there, on the streets of Perth.”

Well done Joe!
I fondly remember the days when you first started, when you (and your older brother) were printers of other people’s artwork. You did a great deal on printing the handbills and invites I designed for venues like the Silver Slipper, Adrians and the Red Parrot and plenty of rock acts during my rock’n’roll days in the early 80s.
Then in 1985 (a year after Kim and I started CB) you put that old printing press to even better use and started X-Press. It was an instant success and you had the best annual parties which you kindly invited me to.
I hope you have the best party of them all on Thursday night at the Astor Theatre.
A great publication – much better than that Shout Magazine – is that still around?
hi,
is it still possible to get hold of a copy of the 25th anniversary edition. I missed out and would love one.
