Who will be the next Ad Person of the Year?
The Campaign Brief Ad Person of the Year is one of our most prestigious awards presented at the Oasis Ball. It recognises someone who enjoyed personal success in the previous calendar year. As the Honour Roll shows, the award has been won by some of the biggest names in the industry.
Who will join them after a great 2009? Campaign Brief has a few people in mind but some previous winners have also come from nominations we hadn’t considered.
Is there someone you think deserves consideration?
Nominating them is easy. Just send their name to martin@campaignbrief.com along with a sentence or two on why you think they’re a contender.
Nominations close Monday, February 1.

It would have to be between John Driscoll and Andy Bell.
Both excellent MD’s who got their agencies through a pretty tough 09.
11.33. I bet you a MILLION dollars that John or Andy WILL NOT win the ad person of the year.
Michael Boyce
3.03. Will that be in anonymous dollars or AUD
3.03
why not?
They are legends of the industry.
I don’t think it was John that kept Marketforce afloat last year. Go Andrew
adam marshall?
i agreed with 4:09, go BOYCE!!!
4.40. I’m not saying that John or Andy are not very experienced ad guys with a lot of successes under their belts. they both deserve praise for their work over the years. But this is about Ad Person OF THE YEAR. Marketforce did not have a good year. They lost many clients and staff members in the year. BBAM seems to be getting a few wins but i’m not sure if that’s enough to win this particular award. (Actually I’m 100% sure it’s not enough to win this award)
One woman on the list since 1987 and that was back in 1998. Come on girls!!
R. Berney???
10.07.
If the award really celebrates personal success then Berney would walk away with the title. Nobody has done more for the international profile of Perth and won more in the process than him over the last couple of years.
My feeling however, is that the award is more of a political thing than CB make out here. Look at the previous winners and you see a list of names more readily associated with longevity and commitment to the industry. Still, maybe this year will be different?
What women are in senior enough roles in the boys club that is Perth Advertising?
I think Michael Boyce is the obvious choice for this one. It’s between him and Andrew Tinning. Two creative icon’s of the state.
Boyce isn’t going to win it. He’s had a good year but not a great one by his lofty standards – and he’d be the first to admit it. He knows that it would be a hollow, ‘populist’ victory lacking any genuine substance.
However, you can never write-off greatness and we expect him to use an average 2009 as motivation for a stellar 2010. He’s our ‘one to watch’ for next year.

Thank you for you kind words Martin. I agree whole heartedly on your comments. You cannot base a whole year on one successful photoshop viral campaign on ‘the Adventures of Ryan and Chuey’ and the occasional stocking of the beer fridge for such a prestigious award. Keep up the good work on the blog.
Michael Boyce
I think Mark Braddock @ Block.
Andrew Tinning.
Next question please.
10.13.
Yup. I think if you put Richard Berney and Andrew Tinning side by side, Richard would probably score more personal creative points this year but AT’s contribution to the industry – which must surely recognise him for the full-on role he played in everything from the PADCs to the Vote Confidence campaign -will see him pip the young pretender for the crown. Berney’s’s glory will no doubt come when he opens his pay slip. I can’t see any suit picking up this year as they have all been retrenching.
Tinning definitely. He is one of the few in the local industry that has, since his arrival, contributed year on year to raising the profile and the level of good advertising for WA, it would be very disappointing to not see him get up on the night.
Are we talking about the Michael Boyce @ MF here…?
Ad person of the year…I would vote for possibly the best sales rep in town…Paul Townsend from Channel 10. His knowledge, outstanding service and infectous personality is unsurpassed as far as I’m concerned. Let’s hope we don’t lose him to the eastern states.
