The Newspapers Works announces PANPA 2015 Newspaper of the Year Award winners
The Newspaper Works announced the winners in the PANPA 2015 Newspaper of the Year Awards at a gala event held at Sydney’s Hilton Hotel last week.
The awards attracted more than 700 entries – spanning print and digital newspaper publishing, photography, publishing innovation and print and production – would be judged best of the best. Major daily and weekend mastheads from Australia and New Zealand took part, with numerous entries from the wider Asia-Pacific region as well. A mix of panels and independent judges oversaw this year’s Newspaper of the Year and Advertising & Marketing awards.
WA papers figured prominently in the Awards. Among them, The Mandurah Coastal Times’ Jon Hewson won two Photography awards. The West Australian won Best Cause-Related or Community Service Campaign for a National/Daily newspaper for ANZAC Centenary, and Community Newspaper Group won Sponsorship of the Year for Community papers for Telethon Kids Appeal.

“Our judges overwhelmingly remarked on the high quality of journalism and the diversity of entertaining, provocative and often courageous ways in which newspaper media is engaging audiences,” said The Newspaper Works chief executive Mark Hollands.
“This ability to authoritatively connect, inform and entertain has never been more important at a time when audiences have limitless choice in content and means of accessing it.
“I congratulate all the finalists and winners on their outstanding work, and thank our judges for contributing their time and expertise. Their commitment underscores the importance of newspaper media to our societies.”
The awards announcement culminated two days of inspiration, ideas and evidence at the Future Forum, with wide-ranging discussion on how newspaper media is finding new ways to engage readers; build sustainable commercial models; and equip the industry’s talented executives to flourish.
The 2015 PANPA Newspaper of the Year Awards were sponsored by Norske Skog. The $10,000 Hegarty Award Scholarship for outstanding young news publishing executive, and the popular photography category, were sponsored by Media Super. Print categories were sponsored by DIC, and Digital categories by Newscycle.
