Tourism Western Australia calls on its Facebook community to help adopt a whale shark
Tourism Western Australia, via agency Host Sydney, is set to launch a Facebook campaign today to share and support research into the whale shark.
The tourism body is teaming with whale shark research and conservation organisation ECCEAN on the campaign, calling on its Facebook community to support its adoption of a whale shark by ‘liking’ a series of posts.
Says Toni O’Donnell, Tourism WA’s director domestic marketing: “The annual whale shark migration to Ningaloo is one of Western Australia’s truly extraordinary experiences attracting visitors from around the world.
“The campaign is a chance for Tourism WA to give back to its highly engaged online community, while supporting important research and conservation efforts to ensure the experience remains sustainable for future generations to enjoy.”

What a load of twaddle. Click LIKE. There you go. I’ve done my bit to save a whale shark. It is just silly. I thought HOST’s job was to get bums on seats in WA’s ailing tourism areas not clock up the LIKES on a FACEBOOK page. I think they have run out of ideas. Bring the account back home boys.
Love Host! Looks like they’ve got the trifecta.
‘Poor’ I think that’s harsh. Sparking conversation (and they’ve got 1,300 likes for this article and almost 200 shares which means they reached thousands) and displaying the richness of WA is what the task would be. Be happy to see the account in WA, but in the meantime this talks directly to their audience of 90,000 who like the page.
Like-drivers are hardly the rich conversation Web 2.0 promised us though, are they? Drip feed a tiny stream of mostly feeble content in exchange for an easy but meaningless trackable response to show the client your levels of “engagement”. Strikes me that the dullards who used to run traditional DR have simply taken over the metrics for digital
Beautifully put Zzz. Liking a page on Facebook is the same as dumping stacks of newspapers on doorsteps and claiming circulation.
Zzzz rocks – so am I to assume you like random shit on Facebook that you don’t agree with or even read?
Yes I do Anonymous. Be honest. You know what it like. You get in a Facebook ‘fuzz’ where you just waste your life looking for something, anything interesting on FB, Stuff from a lot of friends that are not ‘really’ your friends. I’m off to the gym. Here are my poached eggs. Here are some whale sharks. Oh look at me ,I’m at the Qantas Club. Tapping the LIKE button merely plots your boring journey and gives you something to do. If there are lots of LIKES, like sheep we follow. In most cases it is forgotten after it leaves the screen as you scroll forward looking for something to make life bearable. DNYK! Yes. I LIKE random shit because most of it is just that RANDOM shit.
ZZZZ. Awsome comment . So refreshing to hear somebody come out with the truth re FB. Can occasionally be such twaddle.

Unfortunately that 90,000 figure you mention is a bit irrelevant in a media channel where a page called “I need to stop becoming a fan for every fan page that relates to me” can claim over half a million likes http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Need-To-Stop-Becoming-A-Fan-For-Every-Fan-Page-That-Relates-To-Me/194359034298
