TOP JUDGES FOR CAMPAIGN BRIEF AWARDS
An outstanding line-up of national and international creatives has judged this year’s 8 Campaign Brief creative awards, to be presented at the Oasis Ball on Friday, March 20. Perth’s best work in the categories of print, radio, television, out-of-home and online has been assessed by:
– Eugene Cheong, creative president, Ogilvy & Mather Asia
– Luke Chess, creative director, Saatchi & Saatchi Auckland
– Ben Coulson, executive creative director, GPY&R Melbourne
– Darren Devlin, executive creative director, Kastner Sydney
– Andy DiLallo, joint executive creative director, Leo Burnett Sydney
– Steve Dodds, senior copywriter, Whybin TBWA Sydney
– Dominic Goldman, creative director, BBH London
– David Guerrero, executive creative director, BBDO Guerrero, Manila
– Adam Hunt, executive creative director, The Foundry Sydney
– Graham Kelly, former executive creative director, TBWA Tequila Singapore
– Richard Maddocks, executive creative director, Clemenger BBDO Sydney
– Todd McCracken, executive creative director, Ogilvy & Mather Singapore
– Mike O’Sullivan, executive creative director, Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand
– Michael Ritchie, executive producer, Revolver
– Ted Royer, executive creative director Droga5, New York
– Micah Walker, executive creative director, Publicis Mojo Sydney
It’s a top class panel worthy of any international award show.
Besides the creative awards, Campaign of the Year, Ad Person of the Year, Supernova of the Year, Media Organisation of the Year, Advertiser of the Year and Agency of the Year will also be presented at the Ball.
Seven entries for Agency of the Year were received. Demonstrating the best awareness of the target audience, Marketforce’s ‘vintage’ entry included three bottles of Penfolds Bin 389 cab sav. Luckily, Campaign Brief is scrupulously ethical and their entry was in no way given any favouritism as we drank, err…read it.
Tickets for the Oasis Ball can be booked via the Oasis website.

The CB & MF lovefest was already obvious enough – why flaunt it? What are we supposed to take from that photo, that if you really want to impress with your agency of the year submissions you should included expensive plonk?
I love the way it’s dominating the other entries too, literally sitting on top of them. Gee, wonder who’ll win…
Weird too that an agency that’s recently cut so many staff feel totally comfortable spending a shitload of money on what should have been a simple document that outlined their year. Or do they feel they need to ‘bolster’ their chances?
Hardly a vintage year for Mf, though?
Well done on putting together a top jury guys. They’re certainly an interesting mix – and not one from that infamous PADC Wonderland jury. It will be interesting to compare the final results
Tough crowd!what did they think of the overall standard?
A question needs to be raised: should gifts be accepted? You would think that rejection of all gifts is the only way to keep the competition clean and fair. A word needs to be said to all agencies, including marketforce, that no gifts will be accepted and that sending across gifts wont work in their favour (if anything it could only hinder their chances of a win).
In Marketforce’s unfortunate case, a dose of public humiliation might do the trick. I doubt they expected the gift to be announced to the industry. Agencies beware.
Yeah, great collection of ad-brains, but we don’t need to wait to find out what they thought; it’s the same every year.
“Too much safe work, not enough crafting.”
“Some great ideas that just needed to be pushed a bit further…”
blah, blah, blah.
shit. who hasn’t tried to jazz up a submission or pitch with a bit of something interesting? for christ sakes we’re in advertising, not accounting. Have some fun. keep things fresh. make it interesting. and the industry will be better off for all of us.
Yep, it’s just a bit of fun, that’s all.
We’ve received these kinds of entries from lots of agencies over the years.
When Kim and I went to Sydney for the creative judging a few years ago, 303 had two models present their document to us at the airport. Then when we arrived in Sydney we were met with a limo. It was a hoot – we felt like rock stars!
Another year Gatecrasher sent us a plant a day for a week, each one bigger than the last to demonstrate their growth.
This is a creative industry so it’s great to see some creativity applied to this. We appreciate the effort but it doesn’t sway our thinking (need to send cash for that).
Martin Trevaskis
Sure… But since when is 3 bottles of wine “creative”…?
^
It is when no-one else sends em…
Wine is creative if you made it.
Should have been home brew OR moonshine …
(then we could drink it all at the ball)
1.32 – when there’s an idea behind it
1.32 you have no idea
“Penfolds Bin” is an anagram of “Binned Flops”
Hey 1.32 look closer at the wine labels. Penfolds. 3 in a row. Different years I presume. No Enjo book, but better than the rest.
Meerkats look like they’ve gone to a lot of trouble.
We did something really cool one year and it got us fuck all. Guess Martin can see right through all that. My personal opinion is that we all should show a bit of creativity when it comes to our submission. This year we didn’t but that’s not my call.
2.10, 2.12.
As 9.26am has already pointed out. this year was no vintage for mf. So unless the idea was. “We know we’ve had a shit year, so here’s a reminder of what a vintage should be like, now please drink up and give us what could never be rightfully called ours”, it is hard to see what the idea actually was.
Also “Spendin Flob”
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn!
Very clever CB. I guess you are laughing at all of us who feel the need to comments. The judging was obviously weeks ago and lame postings now are all a bit late.
2.29 get to the pub for christ sake. 9.26 just get out a bit more and smile. 11.12 you need help.
The panel is fucking good so let’s see the results on the night. I think we have a shot at agency of the year but so do about 3 others. good luck to everyone.
2.25pm
Nice post-rationalisation. But if you read the card behind the bottles it clearly says “We think it’s been another vintage year. But you be the judge” Epic fail
11.04 you are right on the money but you missed the first poster. Why is the person who wrote the very first comment so bitter over this? He/she must work in a crap agency with a chip on their shoulder. No one from Brand, 303, MF or Kats would post like this (yes, I work in one of these).
Beside 3 bottles of wine is not a bribe – its just a normal friday lunch for Kim.
AoY is not an easy choice for sure but which ever way they go they will be able to justify it.
I wrote the very first comment and I work at one of those agencies too, possibly the same one as you, and it’s not bitterness, more questioning the validity of such ‘gifts’ and the motivation for CB to shove it in our faces. Hard to type with this damn big chip on my shoulder though…
I rock. I should be agency of the freakin year all by myself.
Vintage means OLD! Well, for cars it does. For wine it just means from a certain year. So everyone had a vintage year…
In other words the card means: “we’re old bastards but still make good stuff when other places have either become lame ducks and/or dissolved into the ether.”
And as for 10:51, huh? MF aside, why wouldn’t B, 303 or K get upset? K don’t “do” awards, and 303 and Brand have both lost big clients and/or staff…
Does that leave Rare and GC to fight it out for Agency of the Year?
Maybe some people making negative comments about the creative submissions of ‘some’ agencies…..should think a little bit outside the square (you are in advertising after all) and maybe just maybe…..that the said agency may not simply be sending a good bottle of wine….but indeed there may be a message behind it…god forbid a creative message at that. Working in this industry demands you to be different and to stand out from the crowd……think about bit.
3.38 GC haven’t done a decent bit of work for at least a couple of years now so that would be like putting your wages on a three legged horse called Heehaw
5.46.
way…too…much…ellipsis…Starting…to…read…like morse…code. Tip to…self. Spend..less..time…on…award-entry gimmicks…more..on… improving…writing style.
Bloody well done to MF for coming up with the vintage concept i say – it’s certainly the only creative idea in a small pile of shite (has anyone thought that by posting this story CB are only trying to tell us all to try a bit harder).
In the current work environment it does seem as though we’re all a bit quieter than usual so why not put a bit of thought into your agency’s submission. I guess those with the ring-bound booklets will say it’s all cost related – but then you obviously haven’t had a very successful a year.
Face Value,
If you seriously believe that tacky gimmicks can in anyway compete with a solid presentation based around universally accepted criteria like new-business wins, existing client relationships, awards and creativity, staff retention and appointments, integration and business performance, it is perhaps understandable why you are a bit quieter than usual. Most of us have never been busier.
Let me clear it up for you 11.49. Im not sure where in my statement i suggested substituting killer content with an idea (as inevitably all agency doco content will make said agency look good no matter what sort of year they’ve had). I just reckon it helps to wrap it up in an idea – if i need to explain why, you’re in the wrong industry.
I need also say that no i don’t work for MF, im just astounded that i seem to be the only person on a creative ad blog who appreciates the use of an idea as opposed to just presenting CB with a boring old document.
I’m with you 1.27
I haven’t said anything before as I can’t believe some of the posters above are actually serious. And as one person has already said, CB made up their minds weeks ago. It will be a big announcement which all of us (who lose) will disagree with because we all know we were ripped-off. Great fun.
Never before has so much been said to rattle so many people ….
4.19pm
…which is the exact intention of an anonymous industry blog.
I don’t think MF are rattled at all. Clearly CB has done this to show everyone else what dull submissions they have made. Sure, the proof is in the document and the case it makes for the agency, and Martin and Kim are astute enough to see past the ‘frills’. I hope MF win on the back of their entry (no i don’t work there – actually i wish i worked anywhere that could possibly submit to this award) just to really piss others off.
My money’s on MF not getting AoY, but AT getting Ad Person of the Year. Wheat. chaff, etc.
Never mind the frills. Who’ll be checking the facts behind the submission hyperbole?
AdNews Agency of the Year Host reported a 12% staff turnover (well below the 30% industry standard). With recent firings who comes even close to that in Perth?
Rare.
i think Brand has a chance as they didn’t lose too many clients last year and kept RAC, plus they had a good showing at PADCs and AWARD, although the stuff they got it for was a bit scammy.
marketforce may not have had quite as good a year as the last couple but they still picked up at CB awards, one show i think or clio, finalists at Cannes and AWARD and good at PADC, plus they won Ikea, which is good for any year. I don’t think they lost too many clients either. So while it may not have been their best year, it’s not about comparing your own years its about comparing it to other agency’s years and they’ve done better than most. Martin and Kim might not want to give it to them a third time in a row.
rare have been doing good work and growing their business which they have done consistently for the last couple of years so they may be rewarded for the last few years efforts.
Sounds like the only influencing of judges is being done on this blog. Perhaps if a few of you spent as much time on your clients as you do on this blog, you might get somewhere without having to cry your way to an award. Grow up
3:11 Are you Martin or Kim?
I read a certain judges assessment of this years entries where he compared the standard of the work to the collective stinking arseholes of the homeless in Hyde park. Can I just say Mr.Sydney the quality of the work that’s been coming out of your town of late is on a par with the cheap glucoscocaine that you are stuffing up your up your upturned nose to numb the pain of your massive reality check.
Nope – not me. And I’m pretty sure Kim was just starting his second bottle of red over lunch at 3.11.
Martin
Rare looked good at the PADCs.
I still think I should win everything for doing everything better than everything else.
Whatever you do don’t give it to Bland or Advertising 101.
MF won last year on their showing on the night. Let’s see who does best at the awards.
“Rare looked good at the PADCs”. Junk Waffle you must work there because all of Rare’s wins at PADC were around bronze level. That level is considered by the judges to be “pretty good for Perth”.
Unfortunately Bland and Advertising 101 easily out gun Rare. In terms of gongs this is the big time and you guys have to get up to the Gold level to be a genuine player.
Forgive my ignorance but who is 101? Is that a play on 303 or is it a dig at Marketforce? As for the one piece of work that the acidic Sydney-sider deemed worthy of winning anywhere, my money is on the Office of Road Safety’s X-ray.
