The Midalia one is hard work, not much of a payoff and not really realistic is it?…
I’ll stick a cd and a thumb drive in with each paper next year…
But congrats anyway I spose.
Awesome job Drew & Neil. Also lovin’ Ikea storage and Sungrid. Great job everyone, I’m inspired.
Well done Drew! Without doubt the most deserving and awarded entry of the competition. Class act.
With the exception of the winner, most of these just seem like the same thoughts from previous years rehashed. Sliding out the pages of the paper… Check. Shelves that divide up the paper… Check. News articles rewritten… Check. Think Perth needs some new clients or something.
For what it’s worth…
Midalia – Clever technique, but a little too much work, and most probably ignored by the casual punter. Well done though.
Ikea – Another storage device execution appropriating the page layout over a crossword puzzle layout. Shot itself in the foot for that reason, and therefore no chance of winning. Also, it looked more like a mistake on The West’s part for the bad page layout rather than it being an ad for a product.
RAC Oil – Awesome. But shouldn’t the oil have leaked through to the reverse page of the ad itself, along with the following page? Great ad nevertheless.
Sungrid – Clever, but a little strange seeing as the TV wasn’t actually on, the washing machine wasn’t spinning etc. Says to me that they’re without power. Just a minor thing.
Crimestoppers – Don’t really get it. And as ugly as a scrunched up bit of newspaper.
Perth Zoo – Awesome visual. Probably better as a poster, but still funny and simple.
HBF – Made me want to read every word of every article simply because they were so fucked up. Probably the most engaging of the bunch.
Not sure what everyone else thought on the night, but I know there were a few sour faces once the decision had been made. Which is usual for any West Comp ceremony, let’s be honest.
Great night though, and great comp. Best year yet I’d say.
Sorry, but didn’t Dentsu do this in a much better way for the Asahi newspaper back in 2008? It won gold at the media lions that year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ax4h0I9334
Thanks 7.10 no doubt your vast international judging experience is behind your comments. No doubt your’e winging your way to Cannes as we speak
Hey 5.34, we only allow experienced judges offer comment? Anyone including 7.10 is entitled to offer opinion. it was more encouraging than anything…. Chill.
Wow, 5.34. If that’s indicative of your response to (mostly positive feedback) I pray that we’re not on the same payroll. I’m thinking you ‘shot from the hip’ and probably would not post the same again? (I am not 7.10, nor do I have any idea who it is). Why does what 7.10 have to say offend you so?
Love the work. All of it. Well done to all concerned. Great effort. Well done to The West too. Great to have a newspaper that is so supportive of our industry.
I think this comp has really improved WA creativity. Well done folks.
Thanks for the suggestion 7.10. We will definitely take your advice (no seriously) and give you a credit:
Art Director/s: Adam Cannell / 7.10 PM
That’s the spirit Adam.
(In your speech you can thank 7.10 for such timely advice).
where are 303 and rare?
