The Sunday Times and Channel 9 Perth donate $20,000 to The Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal

The Sunday Times and Channel 9 Perth have announced that they will together donate $20,000 to The Salvation Army’s Bushfire Appeal to provide support to residents affected by the bushfires in Perth Hills.

The Salvation Army’s Bushfire Appeal, which was launched last week, aims to support those who have been affected by the devastation of bushfires that have already taken 44 homes and tragically one life.

The Salvation Army’s Warren Palmer said: “We are grateful by the $20,000 donation from The Sunday Times and Channel 9 Perth. Both have deep connections and relationships with the Perth community. Their donation will go a long way in assisting the community during the recovery period, and hopefully encourage others to donate too.”

The Sunday Times managing director Michelle d’Almeida (above left) said: “Our hearts go out to affected communities. We are humbled, inspired and encouraged by the stories coming through to The Sunday Times and PerthNow newsrooms about the resilience and strength of local communities devastated by the bushfires. We are proud to be playing a role in the recovery for these residents and we will put the full support of our business behind the appeal in any way we can to support our local community. We also encourage all across the state and country to get involved.”

Channel Nine Perth managing director David Mott (above right) said: “The devastating stories and images we have seen this week have made it an easy decision to partner with The Sunday Times and Salvation Army in this worthwhile cause. Whilst it is devastating and many have suffered great losses, the community has pulled together to support each other. We too are humbled by this and we are proud to be part of the appeal.”

To date over 100 volunteers have provided over 5000 meals to fire fighters at over six separate fire locations across Perth.

The Salvation Army is asking for financial donations only due to the logistical challenges of material aid and the uncertainty of presenting needs right now.
