Campaign Brief WA turns 30 in June, so over the thirty days of the month we’re looking back and choosing the best ad done in each of our 30 years.
The Piper West outdoor poster by O&M is a no-brainer and the easiest selection we’ll make.
Actually, it might have been done in 1983 but it certainly gained notoriety in 1984 when it won Gold at AWARD.
It remains Perth’s only Gold winner at any big national or international award show and catapulted its creator, Steve Brown, to stardom.
We’ve showcased this outdoor gem many times over the years. It’s the perfect example of making the most an unlikely creative opportunity – small client, tiny budget, no time. The result? Brilliant! Certainly one of our all-time favourites.

Way to go brother still up the top I see
It’s a pretty sad indictment on the state of local marketing budgets that this ‘no time, tiny budget, small client’ ad would be a super deluxe media and production spend in Perth in 2016. Getting a custom die-cut poster opportunity? On a giant billboard? With a week to concept and create? GLORIOUS! The spend to licence the font would be enough to bankrupt most ‘creative opportunity’ clients 🙂
Still a great ad, though. Jealous.
