Day Four
OK. So here’s where the elephant walks into the room.
We’re now at the interesting bit. The bit where I can’t say much. Butwhat was a tsunami of entries is now a small pool of metal contenders;the kind that dries up a little every time it is exposed to the jury.With the exception of one or two pieces that I would or wouldn’t haveliked to see make the cut, I don’t think there will be too manysurprises. There has already been debate about whether there are toomany or too few contenders, however by the end of play tomorrow I’d putmy money on that pool becoming more of a pond, with a water feature.
Today we finished early to go on a tour of the 9th Ward with the MakeIt Right Foundation, a charity started by Brad Pitt to reinstatequality, sustainable housing to the areas hardest-hit by Katrina. 13acclaimed architects were invited to take part in the project,developing their own interpretation of a traditional New OrleansShotgun house. A total of150 of these houses will be built, but the effect of the project on thecommunity’s spirit is obvious. And when you’ve spent a week looking atideas from around the world, you feel like giving an award to the housedesigned to float on a rising water level.
Anyhow, with half the jury gettin’ down with Jay-Z in the hood untilthe eggs, salmon, bacon and shrimp-grits hit the frying pan; tomorrowis going to be an interesting day.
