Rare continues to fuel growth trajectory with acquisition of Peter Bevan’s Campaign Makers

Rare has enjoyed enormous growth over recent years and now employs “more than 40 of Perth’s smartest marketing people”. While a major part of that growth has been the result of a string of high profile client wins including Cash Converters, ECU and Garden City, Rare MD Callum Mackenzie said that part of their growth strategy has been acquisition.

“We spent a lot of time looking for the right opportunities throughout 2017, and came close on a couple of occasions. One that was successful, I’m happy to say, was the acquisition of Peter Bevan’s Campaign Makers. Not only did it add a number of great clients to our growing list, including Bayswater Car Hire and additional Mirvac developments, it also gave us the opportunity to share Peter’s enormous experience with our team.”

Rare ECD Brett Wheeler had worked with Bevan in the past and was thrilled to be working with him again. “Peter’s one of Perth’s advertising legends. He started his own business back in 1971, and at age 25 was the youngest accredited agency director in Australia. And he’s the guy who dragged [Meerkats co-founder] Mike Edmonds out of the Boans’ advertising department and gave him a job as a junior writer.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a long career in this amazing industry, and couldn’t think of a nicer way to end it than working with the team at Rare,” Bevan said. “They’re an amazing bunch of people and it’s been great to be there with them and witness the agency’s staggering growth over the past year. I’ll be leaving my clients in great hands.”

Bevan started his career at WA Newspapers in 1968 and, after completing his cadetship, left to start Pen Graphics & Advertising in 1971. He sold to Lintas SSB in 1988, joined Adlink as Director of Retail a year later, then started Campaign Makers in 1993. He officially retires on 21 April this year.

Mackenzie said that Rare will be on the lookout for other acquisition opportunities in 2018 as it continues to grow.
