AGDA presents ‘From the Sublime to the Suburban’ – Thursday July 15
Perth: Sleepy backwater or pulsating centre of creative vibrancy?
AGDA WA has prepared an amazing night to engage your type sensibilities and formally introduce the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) with a talk by the Co Deputy Chair/Australasian Co-ordinator Becky Chilcott, who will present an eye-popping look at some amazing typographic professional practice right here in Australia.

I wonder how many Perth agency art directors will make it to this talk? Two, maybe three as it’s in Freo. And yet this time next year, we’ll no doubt be having the same hand-wringing over WA’s crafting skills and why we never win anything at the print lions.
OK, so this Perth-based Art Director went and frankly, the offer of “…an eye-popping look at some amazing typographic professional practice right here in Australia”… was simply not delivered.
We saw samples of previous iSTD award- and student- work stretching back years, heard a history of the iSTD (“1923 was a good year…” and there were even a couple of typo’s in the slides… (It’s Why Not Associates, not What Not…)…
I felt sorry for any students looking to learn more about the commercial application of good typography because this wasn’t the place to do it.
To avoid being wholly negative and to turn this into a positive experience, can I recommend the following link to Landor’s work on the Melbourne Identity:

This is just one example of the kind of fantastic work myself and my colleagues were looking forward to hearing about – and that Australian creatives can be proud of and should be discussing.
