New directors at Beautiful Pictures bring unique vision and vibrant new energy for Perth agencies
There have been several changes at Beautiful Pictures along with the addition of three new directors to the Perth advertising world.
Miranda Edmonds (above left), Mike Oldershaw (centre) and Luke Sargon (right), who have been busy over the last few months, have all brought their unique visions to the Beautiful Pictures team.
Edmonds has entered the world of commercials from a background in short film. Her work shows cinematic vision and raw human emotion as they tell stories that resonate and entertain. The award-winning short Tango Underpants stars Emma Booth as a forlorn Australian backpacker who discovers the tango and the importance of the right underwear in Argentina.
Her recent commercial work has included the Brownes Dairy ‘An Easy Yes’ campaign, a piece for Cash Converters, and a touching commercial for Ronald McDonald House.
“Working with Beautiful Pictures this year has been just brilliant,” said Edmonds. “I love the energy and pace of TVCs and enjoy the attention to detail they have. It has also been a great opportunity to collaborate with some extremely talented people both on-set and in the agencies.”
Oldershaw enjoys creating and developing strong characters for performance-based scripts. He directs stories for various media platforms and is just as at home making long format viral content as he is making a traditional TV commercial. His experience as a casting director has given him the perfect background for his career as a performance/comedy-focused director.
Oldershaw has enjoyed great success as a director of commercials working on major campaigns for companies such as Fisher & Paykel, Nestle, Cadbury, Westpac, Telecom Sanitarium, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Lotterywest, Ford, NIB Insurance and Purina along with many others both in Australia and New Zealand.
Sargon has recently returned to Perth after living in Amsterdam for a number of years. As a director, Sargon’s drive is to connect with people through laughter and creativity. He has an innate ability to delve inside a project from concept to creation and take viewers on a journey with him.
His time in Amsterdam has facilitated this passion for creativity and people, whether it’s working with hip-hop artists from South Africa, a not-for-profit in Germany, or collaborating with some of The Netherland’s and Russia’s top film crews. Sargon is excited to be back home in Perth. Since his return he has directed the Thermomix ‘Food Moods’ series of online advertisements, and a TVC for MOMU Home Builders.
Besides these three new faces, Beautiful Pictures has also welcomed back Renée Webster, who directed some of Perth’s best work in recent years, including the award-winning Brownes Dairy ‘A Natural Silence’ campaign.
Webster has had some exciting developments in long form drama that have kept her busy in 2017. Whilst that meant she has been unavailable for commercials for most of this year, she is looking forward to returning next year as her drama projects move into the financing stage.
“It’s been an amazing year in drama and script development, but I’m very much looking forward to returning to Beautiful Pictures’ books in 2018 and hope to work with some creative teams to bring something special to the screen,” said Webster.
Beautiful Pictures owner and producer Kate Downie said the new directors and Webster’s return were exciting developments for Perth.
“I’m excited to have such a great mix of talented directors working with us from various backgrounds of film-making and to inject a vibrant new energy into the advertising world here.”
