MICHAEL JOY RELEASES FIRST FEATURE FILM
Former Perth director Michael Joy has released his first feature film, Men’s Group.
It’s the story of Paul, Freddy, Cecil, Lucas, Moses and Alex, who meet once a week at Paul’s home to talk. When they begin they are complete strangers. They soon discover that they have something in common, being male. As trust grows between them they gradually begin to share as they learn to listen to each other. They discover that they are not quite so alone in their fears as they had presumed.
It was the highest scoring Australian feature film as voted by the audience at this year’s Sydney film festival.
Along with producer Neal Kingston, Joy formed Monster With Two Toes in the early-90s. It quickly became Perth’s top production company with a reputation for producing national standard work.
On the back of increasing work for eastern states agencies, Joy and Kingston closed Monster in Perth and relocated to Sydney to form a relationship with Adrian Hayward’s HAT Productions at the end of 1998.
Joy began developing Men’s Group in 2006 in collaboration with producer John L. Simpson.
Men’s Group is currently showing at Cinema Paradiso.

I haven’t worked with too many directors doing ads that wouldn’t rather be making a feature film, unfortunately very few get to do it. Well done Michael, not only have you written and directed your first film but you’ve made a truly inspiring movie. Beautifully written. Flawless direction. Amazing characters. Congratulations.
