MICHAEL COLLINS CARICATURE PRIZE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW NIGHT

For the past month Western Australia has been recognised as the caricature capital of Australia.

This year the Michael Collins Caricature Award received a record 89 entries from highly decorated artists throughout Australia, all in the name of helping to raise funds for Australia’s leading heart health charity, the Heart Foundation.

Gordon Ramsay, Troy Buswell, Adam Gilchrist, Tom Cruise, Amy Winehouse,Andrew Denton, Julia Gillard, Anthony Mundine and The Pope are just some of the characters featured.

The winners will be announced tomorrow evening, Friday October 17, at Central TAFE Gallery.

With a first prize of $6,000 a runner up prize of $1,000 and a student prize of $300 (plus a drawing package), Australia’s Richest Caricature Award is now in it third year and is becoming known as the Archibald Prize to caricature artists.

The award honours the memory of Michael Collins, a highly respected and talented member of the WA Arts Community, who taught the art of caricature to thousands of adults and children. He passed away in 2005 and in recognition of his commitment to caricature, WA members of the Australian Cartoonist’s Association established the award. It aims to promote the art of caricature and give recognition to the work of cartoonists who add so much humour to our lives.

Entries are now on display to view and record at Central TAFE Gallery, 12 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge. Gallery hours Wed 15th to Fri 17th 11- 4pm, Saturday 18th and Sunday October 19th 1-4pm.

All entries are up for auction on the online gallery to raise funds for the Heart Foundation. Funds raised help fight heart, stroke and blood vessel disease through research, education and patient support.
