Linc launches ‘Men Don’t Get It’ social media project with Karrinyup Shopping Centre

MDGI.jpgLinc has launched a social media project exploring the way men often misunderstand the strange creature that is woman, and the hilarity that ensues.

Receiving more than 22,000 hits in its first week, Men Don’t Get It is an online project in a Mars-Venus vein that aims to ignite a conversation about men and women, providing an interactive social media space where Perth women can share their experiences of how the men in their lives sometimes miss the point – and just don’t get it.

Social media sites are taking the world, in particular, Australia, by storm. According to statistics released by Nielsen, Australians spend more time on social networking sites than those in any other country, with an average per person of seven hours and nineteen minutes (as recorded in April 2010).

Men Don’t Get It is already generating a buzz among WA women, providing them with a space online where they can congregate and share their experiences. The website also features videos, articles and links, along with profiles of regular bloggers.

The many, often humorous, misunderstandings and frustrations shared on the website about the way men and women seem to speak an entirely different language, have started a conversation that resounds with women of all ages. And it is this lost-in-translation element that produces the engaging and entertaining stories that women have been sharing.

Linc Group Managing Director John Carlson says “men and women are not the same, we do think differently, and from a marketers perspective it’s important for us to understand how women think, as they make the majority of purchase decisions”.

Karrinyup Shopping Centre is collaborating in the project, housing a tangible Men Don’t Get It display point and providing female shoppers with the chance to win by contributing.

Marketing Manager of Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Andrew Wilkinson, said the Men Don’t Get It project is another way in which Karrinyup hopes to engage female shoppers.

“We aim to provide a shopping experience at Karrinyup that is exciting offering a little bit more, whether it be in the form of an exclusive promotion or competition. I think it is valuable to explore and try to understand the differences between men and women and the way we communicate. Hopefully the insight gained will help men and women appreciate and celebrate each other’s differences, and help us communicate better.”

The Karrinyup-Men Don’t Get It promotion runs for six weeks and gives visitors to Karrinyup Shopping Centre a chance to win a $100 Karrinyup gift voucher by completing an entry form at the Men Don’t Get It display and placing it in the barrel.

A major prize of $500 worth of Karrinyup gift vouchers is also up for grabs. Entries placed in the barrel at Karrinyup will be posted on the website and the best comment as voted at www.men-dont-get-it.com.au by visitors to the site will win the major prize.

29 year old Tracey won the first $100 Karrinyup Gift Voucher with this entry: “That when you work six days a week standing on your feet all day, walking the Bibbilmun Walking Track for [our] annual holiday doesn’t cut the mustard!”
