Marty Braine calls it a day; Gallagher and Fragomeni to take over Brainestorm Studios
After twenty years behind the mixing desk at multi-award winning Perth recording studio Brainestorm, its founder and owner Marty Braine has decided to move on to other things.
“I’ve had a ball working on some amazing projects with some of Perth’s most talented creatives,” Marty said, “but the time has come to take a break and pursue other interests and challenges. These may, or may not, include working as a freelance producer, fostering and coaching new talent, and consulting on casting.”
Marty is Perth’s most respected and experienced audio engineer and producer. Under his directorship, Brainestorm won the Mix 94.5 Producer of the Year no fewer than 12 times, and was also responsible for producing hundreds of award-winning radio commercials and television soundtracks.
Marty leaves Brainestorm on July 1st, but it will be business as usual at the studio under the new ownership of current Brainestorm staff Nick Gallagher and Michael Fragomeni.
It’s hard to say who will miss Marty the most – the many Perth creatives who rely on his wisdom, wit and ears or the head waiter at the Royal India. (Actually, that’s not so hard!)

Marty, you’re breaking my heart right now. Will miss your chats and your ‘Joshy Boy!’ and your amazing wine and your big ol’ grin. Thanks for making Rikki and my very first radio session so much fun all those years ago and continuing to make me smile every time I popped my head over the fence (road) for a chat and a cheeky drink or three. I don’t know about this Nick clown you’ve got running the show but Mike seems like a nice enough fellah. But geez, Brainestorm is now officially lacking in the rad moustache department.
Dearest Martini. I think I speak for Justin, Julian, Mike and of course myself when I say a massive thank you. Your belief and trust in us is the reason we get to do what we love everyday. It still baffles me that you called me back after I hand delivered you a showreel – addressed to someone else! Your passion for and commitment to our industry is second to none. As is your moustache. Anytime you suggest a bottle of red and stories of sessions from the 70s, I will be there. You are a legend.

Congratulations on an amazing career, Marty. It’s hard to imagine the Perth audio industry without your larger-than-life presence. So many people owed you their start or their restart, and for that we will always be grateful. In the words of Ringo, “Peace and Love!”
Yeah, congrats Marty. Thanks for all your help over the years … and years and years and years. There better be some sort of farewell party.
Has the Braine left the Storm, or vice versa? A little of both, perhaps. My heartfelt thanks for your wisdom, humour, wit, guidance and learnings you have shared with me over many years, Marty. And best wishes to Nick and Michael.

I’m sure we all have a thousand great memories. Mine is the time we jammed 30 of my beer-fueled mates from the rugby club into your studio to sing soccer-style songs for a Transperth radio campaign. You were always willing to help out no matter what the occasion and no task was ever too difficult. You’re a good man Marty. See you at the shops.
Marty, I saw Glengarry Glen Ross on stage the other night, and there’s a moment where Ricky Roma compliments Shelley Levene. He says: “. . . it was, and, excuse me, ’cause it isn’t even my place to say it. It was admirable . . . it was the old stuff.” Well, it isn’t my place to say it, but your work was the old stuff – the craft of capturing a performance, of conjuring an atmosphere, of timing a reveal or a gag. I looked forward to sessions with you more than I looked forward to anything in advertising. You inspired me, you amused me, and you made every script I wrote better. Thanks for everything.
