Linc shuts up shop and goes into voluntary liquidation ending a long history in Perth
Linc, one of Perth’s longest remaining ad agencies, closed it’s doors late last week when Ferrier Hodgson were called in as voluntary liquidators. Campaign Brief hears that several senor staff are taking whatever clients they have and are starting something new. See the story in The West Australian.
Linc has a long bloodline in the Perth market since forming out of a merger between AdLink and Jung Lautrec & Shaw (JLS).
AdLink formed in the late 1970s with a management team of Trevor Betts, Stuart Lee and Ron Shearwood. In the late 80s they merged with the struggling Jackson Langoulant Needham agency to become AdLink DDB Needham with a staff of over 50. When DDB pulled out of Perth the agency reverted back to the AdLink name.
Jung Lautrec & Shaw (JLS) was established in the early 90s by directors John Carlson and Paul Butcher. They merged with AdLink and took up the AdLink JLS name in 1999.
Over the years some of Perth’s biggest names have worked in the agency. Outside of the names above, others to grace the corridors include: Gordon Dawson, Ron Flanagan, Tony Scampoli, Brett Wheeler, Steve Brown, Simon McQuoid, Frank Rosato, Alan Cormack, Bob Harris, Connie Phillips and Didy Massey.
This latest collapse of an agency got Campaign Brief thinking about the number of agencies that have disappeared since Campaign Brief launched in Perth in June 1984. Either through financial troubles or mergers, acquisitions and name changes, our quick memory check of agencies that have come and gone runs to 132 (see below). Linc now makes that list 133.
Feel free to add the names of any agencies we have missed in the comments below.

Damn. Fuck the rules I guess?
Transparent invoicing might not be the answer then?
Farewell Linc and good luck John Carlson. Too bad the northbridge move didn’t pay off. You gave many young people a start in agency land and your heart was in the right place. I’m sure you’ll re-surface in your black shirt with a plan. Perth needs smaller/better.

Very sad for those staff still left, I hope management dig deep in as much as they can and do the right thing. Sadly this is a sign of the times for advertising, Perth advertising in particular. Buckle up people, we’re in for a bumpy ride.
Mossad? Strong name.
So are there any agencies still in business since you started in 1984 Martin/Kim? Marketforce?
Who are all these agencies?
If I’m not mistaken , Marketforce is the only agency that has remained constant since the 80’s ?
BC&Y and Ad Impact have been around since the 80s. not as long as MF but probably since late 80s
Hasn’t The Workhouse has been around since 1980?
A few more agencies have come to mind:
DMM

Shearwood Advt
Wiburd & Shorter

MDA Admedia

MJB&B?

PAC Advertising. One of the first Campaign Brief issues carried a piece I wrote telling the world that despite a major client defaulting on their media bill, PAC Advertising was as strong as ever. Two weeks later it folded. By doing this a precedent\tradition had been set: any time an agency puts a “We’re okay” piece in CB, it means they are on the way out!
The Shorter Group. One of many variations on the name of course.

Plenty more to come. Going broke or being bought out is the only future for most. Only those that reinvent themselves will survive. Stop copying old creative crap and rolling out last years media plan people. Good luck.
“interesting” way to promote yourself

In Western Australia, rules fuck you!
You forget Marketforce Direct and 141 Direct – both were headed by Tony Prescott for a while before he eventually moved over east.
If you’re willing to include struggling agencies that went through a few short-term name-changes before either merging / reviving / collapsing then that list is going to get a lot longer…
I was an employee of Linc Integrated the day it went under. We fought hard to keep it open, I have nothing but respect for John Carlson and everyone who worked there. It’s a very sad time for the industry, boring inhouse roles we go. Booo!
Maybe not Linc Employee – don’t reach for the tissue box yet! We’re currently looking for a graphic/web designer. If you’re interested, email me your resume and link to your portfolio. We’re a creative agency with a great culture that is still growing and going strong after 24 years. Email brenda@key2creative.com.au
