International recognition in Beijing and New York for cookbooks photographed by Craig Kinder
Perth photographer Craig Kinder’s stunning imagery in two Australian-produced cookbooks has earned him three international awards.
Kinder and fellow Perth residents Sri Lankan master cook Sarogini Kamalanathan, freelance writer Norman Burns (pictured near left with Kinder far left atop the Rockefeller Centre in New York) and designer Cally Browning, self-published a 188-page hardcover book, Sarogini’s Sri Lanka Food, which took out Best Indian or Sri Lankan cookbook at the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards held in Beijing on May 20.
Cookbooks from 187 countries were competing for overall ‘best in the world’ in multiple categories.
Kinder’s photography was also an integral part of the success for another WA-produced cookbook at the Gourmand awards, Saporito, which took second place in the World Cuisine (Italian) category.
And it wasn’t just in Beijing that Sri Lanka Food scored a gong; the book was awarded a Silver Medal in the cookbook section at the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs) held in Manhattan, New York, on May 28.
“It’s been great to work on such interesting, diverse, projects and be honoured at two international awards,” said Kinder. “To have peers in the cookbook publishing world recognise these two books as world-class is a real thrill. And helping Sarogini, who is in her 70s, to achieve a lifelong dream to produce a cookbook, is especially gratifying.”
Kinder, who runs f22Photography with his photographer wife Emma, is not one to rest on his laurels; he was straight into another shoot after a 31-hour flight back from the IPPYs.
