TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with a commercial share of 39.8%, followed by NEW-10 with 31.5% and STW-9 with 28.7%.

TVW-7 had fourteen of the top fifteen programmes for Total People whichincluded News, Today Tonight, The Force – Behind The Line, RSPCA AnimalRescue, Border Security – Australia’s Front Line, City Homicide,Medical Emergency, The One – Australia’s Greatest Psychic & BetterHomes & Gardens. The season final of My Name Is Earl performed wellwith our younger demos topping People 18-39 & 25-39, with anincrease of 29,000 & 31,000 respectively. The One – Australia’sMost Gifted Psychic is still rating well against Total People with anincrease in audience of 6.6%.

STW-9’s only programme in the topfifteen for Total People was 60 Minutes with an average audience of429,000. 60 Minutes had an audience increase of 6.5% and is stillholding onto its top position for the fourth Sunday running.

On NEW-10, The announcement of the winner for the 8th and final season of BigBrother could not bring back audiences with a decrease of 15.3% ofTotal People from the previous week’s eviction.

NEW-10 continues todominate the Daytime period with the Ten News At Five taking out threeof the Top 5 spots for Total People. The Saturday Night AFL matchbetween West Coast & Saint Kilda had a large audience increasetaking out the week’s third top position for the daytime period, with114,000 people tuning in to see the Eagles win. Seven’s Friday nightAFL Game – Hawthorn vs Geelong- toted as the blockbuster match of theseason, reached an audience of 152,000 for Total People, a decrease of12.4% on the previous Friday Night Game – Collingwood vs NorthMelbourne.

SBS

SBS had its highest audience for the 2008Tour De France on Saturday night with an average of 587,373 viewerstuning in to watch the final stage and see Cadel Evans narrowly missout on first place. This result pushed up the networks share for theevening up to 7%. In Perth the final stage attracted 83,071 viewers,the largest audience for this year’s Tour De France.

SBS has planswhich include four new television channels and nine digital radiochannels by 2013. From 2009, they want to add an extra 100 hours ofcontent, including drama, comedy and documentaries, on its main channeland also plan to launch SBS World, replacing the SBS News channel, nextyear.

ABC

The ABC has launched a free internet TV service,called ABC iView. The service, which is available at abc.net.au/iview,has five channels – CatchUp (shows weekly ABC 1 and 2 programmes),News, Kazam! (Kid’s channel), Docs (natural history, socialdocumentaries and international arts), Arts (local and internationalarts) and Shop (previews of programmes). The service will playstreaming video.

NIELSEN’S GLOBAL ADVIEW PULSE REPORT

Accordingto this report, global advertising expenditure grew by just over 4% inthe first quarter of the year.  China was the world’s fastest growingad market. Growth in Asia was up approximately 10%, Africa enjoyed a16% increase, North America was up 1% and Europe remained flat. Otherfindings were as follows:

• The majority of ad spend comes from healthcare – 10% of all ad activity.

• 9% of global consumers ranked health as their biggest concern.

• FMCG grew at 6.7%

• Spend on clothing and accessories increased by 5.5%

• Television remains the most popular ad medium, accounting for 60% of global spend which represented a 6.9% yearly growth rate.

• Newspapers represented almost 24% of spend growing by 0.4%

• Magazines showed a slight decline of .9%

KERRY STOKES AND WEST AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPERS

KerryStokes’ Seven Network has increased its stake in West AustralianNewspapers, now owning 22.3% of the company. This makes them thelargest shareholder.

FREMANTLE MEDIA AND MYSPACE

A dealbetween these two companies will see the TV show Neighbours telecast onMySpace along with behind the scene footage. In addition, a videochannel has been set up to coincide with the series premiere of fashionreality show Project Runway. The channel will feature video highlights,diary and blog entries and style tips from judges

SURVEY BY RESEARCH NOW

This survey was based on 13,000 people using News Digital Media websites and found the following:

•They spend almost double the amount of time online each week comparedto the national average – 28 hours online each week which is double thenational average of 14 hours.

• Emailing was the function most usedonline, but banking, pre-purchase research and keeping up with thelatest news and weather were also a component.

• Over 87% said they researched products online before buying with 79% purchasing products through the net.

• 98% of respondents used the internet more than once a day on average using it 4.6 times a day during the week.

• On weekends, 94% went online doing so 3.4 times a day.

• 81% said they access the internet at home during the week, rising to 90% on weekends.

HITWISE SEARCH ENGINE ANALYSIS FOR JUNE

Googlecontinues to dominate as the number one search engine in Australia withalmost nine out of ten searches carried out through Google – anincrease of 11.79% compared to the same period last year. MSN Searchand Yahoo! Search engines each received 6.72% and 3.93% respectively,while the remaining 42 search engines included by Hitwise, accountedfor only 1.54%. Search engines remain integral to navigate to keyindustry categories such as health and medicine (39.53%), online videowith 28.68% (up 16% YOY), travel with 34.16% and shopping andclassified search was fourth on 28.12%. Social network traffic hasdropped 10%YOY, while entertainment searches have increased by 11%.Google holds its stranglehold in the UK and US search markets as well.Microsoft is attempting to buy Yahoo! in a bid to challenge Google.
