TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with acommercial share of 47.6%, followed by NEW-10 with 27.5% and STW-9 with24.9%.

Sevens’ much talked about Ben Cousins special “Such as Life: TheTroubled Times of Ben Cousins’ on Wednesday night won the top positionacross all our demographics, reaching an average audience of 415,000viewers locally (tarp 23.4) and 1,999,600 nationally (13.4) againstTotal People. Although the second instalment on Thursday night dropped73,000 viewers, however, it still managed to rank second with all ourdemographics. Other programmes in the top fifteen on TVW-7 includedNews, Packed To The Rafters, Today Tonight, Seven’s AFL: Round 22:Fremantle vs Carlton, Sunday Night and World’s Strictest Parents.Packed to The Rafters reached an average audience of 219,000, down29,000 viewers from the previous week, losing its top position to takesixth spot against Total People.

STW-9’s top performing programmeagainst Total People was Top Gear which just made the top twenty andthe top fifteen against People 25-54 and 35-54.

Ten’s new showOffspring performed well, making the top five against all ourdemographics and increasing viewership by 15,000 week on week againstTotal People. Other programmes to make the top fifteen were ModernFamily and Undercover Boss.

Ten News at Five grabbed the two toppositions in the daytime segment followed by Seven’s AFL: Round 21:West Coast vs North Melbourne which reached an average audience of119,000 viewers.

SEVEN NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENT

This year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final will be broadcast in High Definition3D. Plans for the one off special event were released by the AustralianFootball League, Panasonic Australia and the Seven Network who willbroadcast the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final. Television viewers will beable to watch the game on digital channel 40 using a 3D television andcompatible eyewear.

NEW MENS’MAGAZINE

A new mens’ magazine called GQ Style will be launched in September. Itwill be published by News Magazines twice a year – the second editioncoming out in March 2011. It will focus on seasonal trends in men’sfashion and grooming. GQ is also relaunching its website – GQ.com.au -and in June launched a location-based iPhone app called GQ BarSpy.

HABBO STUDY

This global study surveyed 49,000 Gen Z’s (11 – 18 year olds) to discover facts about their online usage. Major points were:

  •  Almost one third of Australian teenagers never pay for online content
  • Only 17% are willing to pay for online content in the future
  •  60% of Australian teens share content with friends online with music, then images and games the most frequent
  • 44% believe they will spend more time on the internet as they get older
  • 55% said they think that traditional books, newspapers and magazines will become extinct
  • 75% said the digital world will have no impact on TV and radio

NEW ONLINE NETWORK

A new online network called Populace has launched. Populace claims toreach half a million 16 to 29-yr-olds with local sites in the networkincluding Sneaker Freaker, Tone Deaf, The Enthusiast and Unseen TV,along with Australian views of global youth sites Hypebeast, Lookbook,Resident Advisor and Chictopia.

UK SURVEY – “A play date with the iPAD”

A Study by a UK university on iPad usage has found the following attitudes:

  • Content creation was too difficult on the device but ideal for content consumption.
  • The iPad was considered the number one delivery method for newspapers and magazines
  • Its popularity for books was strong with 41% of iPad owners preferring to read on the device, vs 36% who preferred hard copies
  • Most users did not find iPads very portable
  • More than 60% said they rarely or never took their iPads when they left home
  • 5% said they always took their iPads when they left home (Source: Fairfax)

STREAMING FROM THE INTERNET TO THE TV

Apple TV has launched another set-top box that will streamentertainment bits–movies, TV shows, music, photos, and so on–from theInternet to your HDTV. They claim to have overcome the problemsencountered by their 2007 model and are offering this at a price ofonly $99.

Online video services like Netflix are seeing a surge insubscribers while the easy availability of low-cost media-streaminghardware, including DVRs, set-top boxes and various Blu-ray players andgame consoles, has helped as well. It is expected that Google TV willlaunch a  set-top box over the next few months and  Amazon, whichalready runs an online movie service (which, like Apple TV, offers99-cent rentals of TV episodes), is reportedly developing asubscription streaming service that would challenge Netflix.

Sony is expected to announce a new music and video subscription serviceshortly which would use Sony’s PlayStation game console and otherInternet-connected devices to stream content. Microsoft is rumoured tobe developing a TV channel for its Xbox 360 console as well.
