TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with a commercial share of 39.6%, followed by NEW-10 with 31.7% and STW-9 with 28.7%.

TVW-7 had fourteen of the top fifteen programmes for Total Peoplewhich  included News, Medical Emergency, RSPCA Animal Rescue, TodayTonight, Border Security – Australia’s Front Line and City Homicide.Private Practice increased viewership by 11,000 week on week withPeople 18-39 and by 7,000 with People 25-39. The season final of SurfPatrol performed well with our younger demos and made it into the topten with People 25-39. The second episode of The One – Australia’s MostGifted Psychic is still rating well against Total People although ithad a 1.2% audience decrease from last week.

STW-9’s only programme in the top fifteen for Total People was 60Minutes. This programme took top position with People 18-39 and 25-54and second position with People 25-39. Although 60 Minutes had anaudience decrease of 6% nationally it still managed to hold onto itstop position for the third Sunday running. Two and Half Men continuesto rate well with People 18-39, remaining in the top five with thisdemo. Wipeout jumped into the top ten programmes this week with anaudience increase of 9,000 against People 18-39. CSI: Miami returned toour screens with reasonably good ratings against People 25-54 and 35-54.

Rove on NEW-10 increased audience by 3,000 against People 18-39 andDexter had an audience loss of 3,000 with the same demo. So You ThinkYou Can Dance and Good News Week both made the top ten programmes withPeople 25-39.

Ten’s Saturday night AFL Game – Brisbane vs West Coast Eagles reachedan audience of 160,000 and took the top spot in the day time segmentfor Total People. Ten News at Five dominated the other top fourpositions.

STATE OF THE TV MARKET

According to figures released by KPMG, television advertising revenuesfor free-to-air commercial broadcasters hit $1.75bn in the first sixmonths of the year which is an increase of 1% compared to last year.The Sydney market dropped 1.4%, Melbourne increased marginally (.2%),Brisbane was up 2%, Adelaide dropped .3% and Perth gained approximately3.9% compared to the same time in 2007. Despite the Nine Network’sincreased results this year, Seven is still taking the biggest slice ofthe TV ad pie, with 39.13% of the market (slightly down from lastyear), Nine has secured 31.78% of revenues, (1% down YOY) and Ten hasincreased its share (up 1% YOY) to 29.09%.

The Sony Group are responding to consumer appetite for video byfocusing on three topics: the emergence of iTunes and Ezy DVD downloadas major video suppliers, the scope for growth offered by Foxtel’s highdefinition video on demand service and the launch of its newshort-form, multi-screen episodic video project Gemini Division (on SciFi).

Google is hoping to cash in on the rapidly growing affiliate marketingsector by launching its own affiliate network. Affiliate marketingrepresents close to 16% of the Australian online display market.

INTERNET MOBILE USEAGE

A study implemented by Queensland-based youth marketing agency Freshand based on 10 to 28-year-old mobile users in regional andmetropolitan locations across Queensland concluded the following points:

• 18 to 20-year-old’s were the biggest users of mobile internet, with the iPhone propelling its popularity

• 40% of the Gen Y demographic in Australia have access to mobileinternet from their handset, with 46% using it at least once a month

• One third of the age group said they used mobile internet on a frequent or daily basis, 12% higher than the average Gen Y user

• 10 to 14-year-olds used mobile internet to download ring tones andhandset related content, while 15 to 17-year-olds and 24 to28-year-olds searched for sporting results

• Social networking sites including Facebook and MySpace was prevalentamong the 18 to 20-year-old age group, while 21 to 24-year-olds wereinterested in email and MSN messenger

• Optus was the prime controller of the 18 to 24-year-old age bracketat a 37% market share, while Telstra was strong with the rest of theage bracket

ACP Magazines has launched a new weekly womens’ international magazinecalled Grazia, in a joint venture with Hearst Magazines and with a hugeadvertising campaign – mooted to be in the region of $7M. The coverprice will be $5. The content will be a combination of fashion,entertainment, news, trends and beauty. Australia is the 10th market tolaunch Grazia and the first in the southern hemisphere.

OUTDOOR

The outdoor industry has recorded its sixth consecutive year of growth,posting an 11% increase in half yearly results. While all sectorsrecorded growth, posters outshone other formats, recording a 19%increase YOY, large format grew 15%, transit was up 9% and streetfurniture was up 7%.
