TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with a commercial share of 40.9 %, followed by NEW-10 with 31.7% and STW-9 with 27.4%.

TVW-7’s top performing programmes for Total People included News, Today Tonight, Australia’s Got Talent, Better Homes and Gardens and Border Security – Australia’s Front Line. Moving My Name Is Earl from Sunday to Thursday night paid off for Seven with the programme making the top fifteen for Total People, where last week it failed to make the top thirty. It also took top spot with People 18-39, 25-39 and second position with People 25-54. Better Homes and Gardens rated extremely well this week, making the top five for People 25-39, 25-54 and 35-54. On Friday night it came in at number one nationally with over 1.6 million viewers and took third position in Perth with 217,000 viewers.

STW-9’s strongest programmes for Total People were CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Sea Patrol 2 – The Coup and 60 Minutes. Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares continues to rate well with People 18-39 and 25-39, grabbing fourth position with the latter demo. Amazing Medical Stories and Hell’s Kitchen made the top fifteen for People 18-39 and 25-39. Also popular with the 25-39 year olds was CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Deadly Surf, Domestic Blitz, 10 to 1, all making the top twenty.

NEW-10’s top programmes were NCIS, NCIS RPT and Ten News at Five on Sunday.  NCIS gained 22,000 viewers this week for Total People and made the top five programmes with People 18-39, 25-54 and 35-54.

The top programmes in the daytime segment for Total People were Ten News at Five and Sunday Sports Tonight.  NEW-10’s Saturday AFL match – Fremantle vs North Melbourne took sixth position with an average audience of 138,000.

Seven’s Deal or No Deal averaged 934,000 viewers nationally and 125,000 viewers locally for Total People versus Nine’s Million Dollar Wheel of Fortune which averaged 601,000 viewers nationally and 47,000 locally. In Perth, Wednesday was Deal or No Deals highest performance for the week with an average of 134,000 viewers. Million Dollar Wheel of Fortune’s highest performance day was Tuesday with 55,000 viewers.

FOXTEL AND HDTV

Foxtel will officially launch their HDTV with the telecast of the football World Cup qualifier between Australia and China on June 22nd. They claim more than 15,000 subscribers have already upgraded to HDTV and the new iQ2 set top box.

SBS

SBS has recorded its highest weekly average prime-time audience of 2008, according to OzTam – up 13.7% for Total People nationally. SBS claim this is a result of two programmes – Top Gear – and the European Football Championships.

• 94.5FM remains the number one station for People 10+ with no movement in share from last survey.  The Bunch in breakfast continues to be the favourite breakfast show for People 10+, up 0.2% to 16.7%.

• 92.9 increased their share by 1.4% to retain their number two position against People 10+ and number one position with People 18-39. Hamish and Andy continue to dominate Drive, retaining their number 1 position. Em and Wippa have taken the number two position in Breakfast away from NOVA.

• 96FM experienced decreases against all our demos except People 25-54. They had a slight increase with People 55+ and in the morning segment.

• Nova 93.7 enjoyed their best result of the year, increasing share against all our demographics. They remain in second position with People 18-24 and are equal second with 94.5FM with People 10-17. Nathan & Nat also had their best result since 2006.

• 6PR increased share with People 10-17,  55+ and Grocery Buyers. They are now ahead of ABC720 by 1.8% with People 55+

• 6JJJ lost audience share against People 10+, 10-17, 18-24 and 40-54. They increased 3.2% in the Monday to Friday evening segment and 0.7% in Drive segment with People 10+

SWEENEY SPORTS REPORT

According to this report, the most marketable sportsmen are Cricketers. They hold six of the top 10 positions on the Sweeney Score list, which measures public perception about how appropriate athletes are to endorse brands and organizations. Ricky Ponting is in first place followed by Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee and Glen McGrath are fifth and sixth, Steve Waugh is equal seventh and Andrew Symonds is tenth. Another interesting finding from this year’s list is the continuing high rankings for several retired sports stars, including Waugh, Pat Rafter, Ian Thorpe, Cathy Freeman and Greg Norman.

MAGAZINE FIRST

On June 16, Zoo Weekly Magazine is claiming a magazine first with a 3D component. Four advertisers – Jim Beam, Wrigley’s Eclipse Mints, Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures – are involved. The magazine will have a pair of 3D glasses on the front cover, which will allow readers to scope out features like “Zoo babes”, Sydney Swans players, Zoo midgets, and Uluru in three-dimensional form.

RESEARCH ON WELLBEING BRANDS

An Australian research company called Inside Story has done research on brands which affect our wellbeing. The study found there are 74 brands in the Australian market that “resonate with wellbeing.” It also found no single brand has a clear dominance in the category, The top 10 brands in the wellbeing ranking are:

NEW SURVEY RE MARKETING EXPENDITURE

According to a survey commissioned by the Growth Solutions Group (GSG), marketers will not cut their marketing budgets, indeed almost half will increase their spend despite the slowing economy. There were 134 Australian company directors surveyed with only 1% saying they plan to cut their marketing investment and 49% planning to up spend.

Their comments were as follows:

• 28% said it was important to increase awareness and share of mind

• 14% planned to stay ahead of the competition that was cutting down on spend, while 8% were planning to grow their share or enter new markets


Over a third (37%) said the biggest marketing challenge was staying competitive in a difficult marketplace with limited resources, including time and budget

• 40% said marketing was not a “key driver” or had limited impact on the company’s competitive advantage.
