Once again TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People witha commercial share of 43.9%, followed by NEW-10 with 28.4% and STW-9 on27.7%.

TVW-7 took out fourteen of the top fifteen positions for TotalPeople with The Force – Behind The Line, Find My Family, BorderSecurity – Australia’s Front Line, The Zoo, News, Today Tonight, PackedTo The Rafters, Criminal Minds, Dancing With The Stars, City Homicide,and Crash Scene Investigators. On Sunday night TVW-7 replaced theflailing American Series of Kath & Kim with repeats of theAustralian version, which paid off with an increase in averageaudience of 37.9% from the previous week. The second InternationalRules match from the MCG on Friday night had an average audience of80,000 as drop of 40.7% from the first game.

The top rating programmefor NEW-10 was NCIS with an average audience of 171,000 people. Theseason finale of Jamie’s Ministry Of Food saw a drop in averageaudience of 21.4% week on week.

STW-9’s top rating programme wasWednesday’s 2000-2030 Two And A Half Men with an average audience of176,000 people, just making it into the top 15 programmes for the week.After moving The Mentalist to a Wednesday night on the 22nd of October,due to the Rugby League World Cup, the show picked up its ratings lastweek with an average audience of 118,000, a 34.7% increase from theprevious week.

RADIO

Survey #7, 2008 results were released last week and the following is a snap shot of the Eastern States market.

Sydney

• 2GB continued its strong form to remain the number one station for People 10+ despite a share decrease of 0.4%, down to 13.0%.

• 2Day FM lost 1.8% for People 10+, to drop to third behind ABC702.This was brought on by significant drops in share for People 18-24 and10-17 of 12.2% and 5.5% respectively.

• Triple M dropped another 0.5% to 4.4%, but saw an increase of 4.0% in share for People 18-24.

• Nova 96.9 posted a 0.8% growth to 9.0%, driven by an increase of share across People 10-17, 18-24 and 25-39.

• Vega 95.3 slightly increased share by 0.2% up to 4.5%, and had an increase of 2.5% for People 10-17.

• Mix 106.5 lost the 0.3% it gained in the last survey; their strongest loss was People 18-24 with a decrease of 2.4%.

• WSFM jumped 1.2% to 8.0%, increasing share against People 25-39, 40-54 and 55+.

Melbourne

• Fox FM retained its top position for People 10+, despite a decreasein share of 0.5% down to 14.6%. The most significant decrease was 1.0%for People 40-54, but is still leading the demographic.

• 3AW lost a further 0.9% to a 14.0% audience share. The station lost afurther 1.4% for People 40-54, to add to the 2.3% lost in Survey 6.

• Triple M slid another 0.6 points to 5.9%, losing share across all dayparts. Despite this they had an increase of 0.9% for People 10-17.

• Nova 100 regained 0.9% for People 10+, backed by increases across all demographics.

• Vega 91.5 lost share by 0.2%, but saw an increase of 0.7% for People18-24, to regain a little bit of the 3.4% they lost last survey.

• Gold FM dropped another 0.8% to 6.0%, and saw losses across all demographics apart from People 25-39.

• Mix 101.1 FM saw an increase of 1.3% to 5.6%, with increases across all demos.

Brisbane

• Nova 106.9 kept its lead with an increase of 0.5, up to 13.8%, butlost their number one position for People 10-17 with a decrease of 5.5%.

• Triple M slid another 0.2% for People 10+, down to 11.4%. The stationalso lost its number one position for People 40-54 with a decrease of2.5%.

• Talkback station 4BC also saw an increase of 0.3% to 6.4%. Thebiggest increase was 2.2% for People 10-17, but lost 0.5% for People55+.

• 4KQ lost 0.7%, down from 7.7% to 7.0%. They also lost share against all demographics apart from People 10-17.

• 97.3 FM lost share by 0.7% for People 10+, down to 11.0%. This dropsthem into fourth position, with their greatest loss being 4.6% forPeople 10-17.

• B105 jumped again by 1.3% to 13.0% to be outright in the number twoposition for People 10+. They saw increases across all demographics.

Adelaide

• 5AA remained in the number one position for People 10+ with a shareincrease of 0.3%. The station had a gain of 3.1% for the drive segment(1600-1900).

• Nova 91.9 increased share by 1.0% up to 9.9%. This was driven by an increase across all demographics except for People 55+.

• Triple M remained steady at 10.3%. They lost the number one position for People 25-39 with a decrease of 2.9%.

• SAFM grew by 0.1% to 12.8%, and remains the number three station forPeople 10+. Despite this they still remain number one for People 10-17and 18-24, and had taken out the joint top position for People 25-40along with Nova 91.9

• Mix 102.3 grew by 0.4% to 13.2%, and remains the number two stationfor People 10+. They saw growth against all demographics, except People10-17.

THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

The ACCC has stated that it will not intervene if the Seven Networkwants to make a full acquisition of WAN, and it sees no competitionissues at this stage. Interestingly, rather than result in an increasedshare price, this has seemingly caused a 17% fall for West prices.

TELSTRA’S ONLINE & MOBILE 24HR NEWS

With Sky News as a content supplier, Telstra Media has launchedAustralia’s first online and mobile dedicated 24 hour news channel forits BigPond mobile and online users. The channel titled BigPond Live TVNews consists of a continuous live video stream of general news,politics, finance, sport and weather.

SUMMER ARTS & MUSIC

The West Australian will be publishing on December 13 the “Summer Arts& Music Guide” in the form of a lift out magazine. The 32 pagemagazine will be produced by a team of The West’s well known arts andmusic writers and there will be an extensive calendar – this calendarwill be a 3 to 4 month guide of events.

SWEENEY REPORT

The Sweeney Sports 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Report has beencompleted. It involved interviews with 1002 Australians, aged 16 to 65in the 5 cap cities plus Canberra and Hobart. Top line results were asthe follows:

• More than one of every five Australians (21%) named Stephanie Rice’s race wins as their favourite performance at the Games.

• Swimming remains the Olympic sport that appeals to most Australians,with 30% naming it their favourite sport (this compares to a result of47% from the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2000 Sydney Olympics).

• Swimming beat gymnastics, diving and athletics as the most liked sport.

• T
V was the main medium used to receive Olympic news, with 96% of people watching the Seven Network and SBS coverage.

• Games-related internet usage jumped from 17% during the 2004 Olympics to 50% for Beijing.

• 36% of people listened to the coverage on radio.

• 52% received their coverage via.

• 4% of people downloaded internet podcasts.

• Mobile phone text alerts were used by 7% of people.

• 5% watched the Games on their phones – Men aged 16 to 29 were themain users of this medium, with 17% watching the Games on their mobilephones and 18% receiving Olympic text alerts.

DIGITAL SERVICES INDEX

The Australian Interactive Media Industry Association plans to launchits Digital Services Index on 5 November. This is a joint initiativewith Hyro and IBM Australia. The Index will independently measure thelevels of investment and expenditure across all aspects of theAustralian digital economy. Measurement will now cover all elements andinvestment required to develop commercial digital initiatives, fromonline strategy, creative, usability and online advertising through tothe software and back end infrastructure required to run them.
