TVW-7 has won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with acommercial share of 44.9%, while STW-9 had a share of 27.6% and NEW-10had 27.5%.
TVW-7 had all of the top 15 programmes for Total People withThe Force – Behind The Line, Find My Family, News, Today Tonight,Border Security – Australia’s Front Line, RSPCA Animal Rescue, PackedTo The Rafters, Better Homes And Gardens, Medical Emergency, CriminalMinds, and City Homicide. TVW-7’s Telethon Close on Sunday had anaverage audience of 147,000 people, a decrease of 30% on the 2007Telethon Close. That is interesting considering that the Network raisedan amazing $7.5M. The two hour series return of Heroes wasdisappointing pulling an average audience of 90,000, and losing toNEW-10’s Law & Order Double and STW-9’s The Strip/RPA.
NCIS was thetop rating programme for NEW-10, with an average audience of 170,000, a3.9% decrease from the previous week. The series finale of America’sNext Top Model was popular amongst the younger demographics making itinto the Top 5 for People 18-39 with an average audience increase of44% for Total People. The top rating programme for STW-9 was once again60 Minutes which generated an audience of 167,000, just missing out onthe top 15. The series premiere of The Mentalist on STW-9 generated anaverage audience of 159,000 people in its Sunday Night 20:30 segment,winning its timeslot against TVW-7’s Telethon Close/Pirates Of TheCaribbean 3 and NEW-10’s Australian Idol/Rove. Nationally The Mentalisthad a good night with an average audience of 1.3 million viewers, againwinning its timeslot.
The V8 Supercars hit the screens this weekend with the annual race atBathurst. With the lack of both AFL and NRL, it was the only sportingprogramme to hit the top 20 nationally averaging over 2 million viewersduring the day’s three preliminary rounds. In Perth the V8 Supercarshad an average audience of 74,000 over the three days, with thecoverage peaking at 93,000 on Sunday during the Bathurst 1000 Race.

The Seven Network has launched SMG Red. This will be a cross-mediaintegrated sales division which will be responsible for salesintegration strategy and implementation across the Seven Network,Pacific Magazines and Yahoo!7. They will also include displayadvertising sales for 3 Mobile’s content portal, Planet 3.
ROY MORGAN CONSUMER CONFIDENCE RATING
The Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating, conducted October 4 and 5,2008 (before the Reserve Bank’s 1% rate cut on Tuesday October 7, 2008)– is down 7 points from September. The fall was mainly caused by fewerAustralians saying that now is a “good time to buy” major householditems, with 29% (down 6%) saying that now is a “good time to buy” – thelowest since April 1993, and 40% (up 10%) saying it’s a “bad time tobuy.” Australians are also more worried about the economic conditionsin Australia as a whole with 44% (up 6%) expecting bad timesfinancially in the next 12 months compared to only 19% (down 6%)expecting we’ll have good times financially.

THE NEW GENERATION SURVEY
This survey was conducted by the Cartoon Network, in Australia, inSeptember 2008 and included interviews with 1500 children. It foundthat in addition to an increase in internet usage among the seven tofourteen year olds, there was also an increase in newspaper andmagazine readership. Not surprisingly, video games, DVDs and theinternet are continuing to grow at an exponential rate, especiallyamong the seven to ten year olds. Daily internet usage increased by 17%for seven and eight year olds and by 4% for 13 and 14 year olds – nowsits at 72%. The survey also revealed that girls use communicationtools better than boys, with the younger female generation outstrippingtheir male counterparts in almost every category except chatrooms andVOIP calls.

Austereo’s Hamish and Andy have taken out top honours for Best On-AirTeam at the 20th Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). The Hamishand Andy Show also picked up Best Networked Program, Best StationPromotion and Best On-Air Team Producer.
Google will start to sell in-game ads for the first time in both the UKand US. AdSense for Games, currently in Beta, will initially sell adsonly for online games and is available to publishers with 80% or moretraffic from the UK or the US. Advertising opportunities will includevideo, image and text links to be displayed at any point within thegames. ComScore research shows more than a quarter of internet usersplay online games every week – equivalent to over 200 million usersworldwide.
