IKEA work by Marketforce and 303 dominates at the 2009 PADC Awards
Rather than an agency, the 2009 PADC Awards presented last night in Burswood’s Astral Ballroom were dominated by Campaign Brief’s two-time advertiser of the Year, IKEA.
All up, work for IKEA won 1 Gold, 2 Silvers, 2 Bronzes, The West Australian Fellowship and Best of Show. The winning work was produced by two different agencies – 303 and Marketforce.
The ‘Crossword’ press ad was the big winner, picking up a Gold inNewspaper & Magazine Advertising (Retail), Best of Show and TheWest Fellowship for Marketforce’s Guy Hamilton-Howlett and JuliaElton-Bott.
Unfortunately, Hamilton-Howlett and Elton-Bott couldn’t be present to accept the award as they had gone to Queensland for the national Caxton Awards, having won Campaign Brief’s The West Australian Caxton competition with this ad.
Marketforce was the leading agency on the night with a Gold, a Silver and 5 Bronzes plus the Best of Show and West Fellowship.
303’s 2008 IKEA catalogue campaign led the way in the prestigioustelevision categories. ‘Want’, ‘Support’ and ‘Space’ received a Silverin TV Campaign while two of the executions – ‘Want’ and ‘Space’ – won aSilver and Bronze respectively in TV Single.
‘Guerilla Garbage’, also by 303, won a Bronze in the Ambient category.
All up 303 won 3 Silvers and 5 Bronzes. As well as the two Silvers and two Bronzes for its IKEA work, 303 alsopicked up a Silver and a Bronze for the Royal Life Saving Association’Spirit’ and ‘Beer’ in the POS Posters category. ‘Spirit’ also won aBronze in Transit and Outdoor. The agency’s fifth Bronze was for theOffice of Road Safety ‘Flash’ radio commercial. That spot also won oneof the major craft awards for the night, the Dave Upson Medal for Sound, for Soundbyte’s Brad Habib.
It was good night for Braincells, which picked up a Gold and a Bronze -its best showing ever. Both awards came in the Packaging category. It’sGold was for ‘Gentlemen’s Agreement’ for Dan Murphy’s Liquor Merchantsand the Bronze was for ‘Clockwork’ for Oakover Wines
The Brand Agency, last year’s most dominant agency, had a much leanertime this year, picking up one Silver and 3 Bronzes. It’s Silver camein Television & Cinema (Social Marketing & Charity) for anOffice of Drugs and Alcohol commercial titled ‘Pregnant’.
In other craft awards, Sauce Films’ Mark Zagar was named Director of the Year and f22’s Craig Kinder Photographer of the Year.
Block Branding enjoyed a trio of wins in craft. Mark Braddock was namedCopywriter of the Year for his John Cheese campaign; Ben Wright wasnamed Art Director of the Year for his work on the same campaign; andIsabel Kruger was named Designer of the Year for her work on ArgyleDiamonds. Somewhat ironically, Block’s design of the PADC Gold ‘Skull’ won Silver in the Miscellaneous category.
First Light’s Matt Osborne won a Bronze inEditing for his work the Department of Child Protection’s ‘Help GetThem There’ via The Brand Agency, and Craig Kinder was awarded’Photographer of the Year’.
The Client Creative Champion award went to Roger Farley from the Officeof Road Safety and the Agency Creative Champion went to young BrandAgency account executive Pia McMorran, who worked on the Office ofDrugs and Alcohol campaign.
The Student Award went to Curtin University’s Gene Brutty.
But the real stars of the night were the first PADC President, Gordon Dawson, who gave the ‘welcome’ address, and fellow legend and inaugural PADC Committee member, Vaughan Sutherland, who MC’d the night. Both entertained the crowd with tales from the earliest days of the Club full of their characteristic wit and humour.

I’d just like to point out that the Bronze award for The Box (Curtin) was a joint entry from The Brand Agency and Longtail. The latter was missed off the credits on the night but played a significant the in the campaign.
I looked but couldn’t find either Gordon or Vaughan after their speeches. So this is me saying thanks for a top night. We’ve paid comediennes before to MC and most were nowhere near as funny as you both. Cheers.
Thanks Paul, you’re a good man!
Gordon and Vaughan, you were both bloody hilarious! It was clear that you both put a lot of effort into the night and we all thank you for doing so. Gordon’s opening with a powerpoint presentation was just fantastic. Comments like ‘Philip Adams,… Dickhead”. I’m still pissing myself laughing just thinking it about. May we all support the PADC for another 20 years. Thanks for a great night guys.
A good night all round but shoot the staging guys – the sound was lousy and the vision all over the place.
Thank god for ikea or it would have been a very average result for MF and 303.
What happened to Rare this year? Did well last year. This year nothin’.
Without ikea 303 would have got the same number of awards as Brand. So yes, very average
Some very good entries, the bar has been raised!!
Mitch is gone 8.05
What does ikea have to do to get a champion award?
And if there was a joint winner from Brand and Longtail how come no one from Longtail got up on stage?
Mitch didn’t leave rare till after the padc qualifying period ended.
Hope that clears that issue up.
Great Night. Fabulous hearing the history of the club. Let’s keep it up for another twenty!
Any ideas how stuff like Crossword will fare internationally given everyone is tightening up their eligibility criteria? Looking back at the Cannes post a few days ago it says they will be asking “Was the work approved and paid for by the client and was it run using media space paid for by the client?”
looks like marty’s got a jump start on movember…best mo in the ad industry!
so basically Rare had a crap year then 2.41?

I didn’t realise we were supposed to win a PADC gong every year.
But we’re ok, we’ve had a good year, Webbo won his first GP in Germany, and backed it up with another in Brazil.
How come our gold and best of show was not good enough to win anything at the Caxtons?
Work for the Caxton comp will come under a lot of scrutiny given the scam radar in shows. I’m surprised ads done for a competition where the client hasn’t paid for it and no media money spent can still be seen as legit. And the Best of the Scams goes to…
Micheal Lynch obviously agrees with you as he mentions in his summary mag and on the national blog that both IKEA crossword and ORS x Ray are both pieces of world class work that should’ve picked up. That’s award shows for you.
Apparently he has free mo rides in Movember
The fact that our industry that supports these award shows is really quite funny, when you the requirements from year to year vary so much as they are judged by relatively small panels of (usually) practicing contemporaries.
At least the Academy Awards are a whole body.
2:23. Yeah my stuff didn’t get up either.
Look, it’s only a problem if you take any of it too seriously. Have a laugh and a drink…
When will we see Richard’s photo on stage?
How come the suit on IKEA at 303 didn’t get the Creative Champion gong. Surely, given the all awards that they have picked up, they’d be a shoe in!
10.36 The Agency has to nominate their champion in this case 303 most likely didn’t .
10.36. When you have a client that already demands good creative and a creative department that is talented enoiugh to deliver it consistently, maybe the suit doesn’t have to be a creative champion to sell the work through. It also doesn’t help the suit’s case if you lose the account despite the quality of the creative.
that’s funny 10:36 – I thought the same thing on the night!
10.36.
I think the decision was probably political, as anything involving suits invariably is. On paper, It would certainly seem like ikea had an excellent year creatively last year, dominating locally and picking up nationally and internationally at the very highest levels. CB will probably correct me, but it would certainly seem to be the best ever creative performance in a single year by a single brand across multiple executions out of a Perth agency. I guess this creative excellence wasn’t the only thing the judges were looking for when they assessed the finalists for creative champion. Well done to the Brand for winning on the night. Hopefully it will inspire them to even greater creative successes next year.
11.05.
I am fairly certain that I heard the 303 suits name among the finalists.
3.29.
You’re right. Losing the account never helps a suits cause. Although in Beardsy’s case, neither did winning it.
Jane Orchard, who was the suit on IKEA, was nomintated and was a finalist. She should have won!! But congrats to the chick from the Brand.
