CURTIN UNI MOVES TO THE BRAND
UPDATED: Campaign Brief has just heard that Curtin University has appointed The Brand Agency over incumbent Gatecrasher and Marketforce following their three-way pitch. While official comment on the appointment from Curtin is coming via a soon to be released press release, CB has spoken to all agencies for their reactions.Naturally, The Brand Agency is overjoyed to be selected as is the agency’s Strategic Planning Director Paul Yole, who drove the pitch and has several years experience on the client from his time at Gatecrasher. Yole said details were still being finalised and he preferred comment to come from the client via the press release.Gatecrasher’s Adam Barker was philosophical: “Curtin is a wonderful brand. But, it is probably one of the most complex advertising accounts to manage in the Perth market. We’ve done an outstanding job over the past five years and we’re extremely proud of all the work we’ve created. We’ve given them an effectiveness award winning campaign based on the positioning Curtinnovation. It’s worked amazingly well, as proven by research. Some accounts simply need change from time to time. We think this is one those cases and we wish Curtin and their new agency the very best”.Marketforce Chairman John Driscoll said they were disappointed to miss out as they believed they had presented some great work in the pitch. He complimented the client on the pitch process.”Curtin gave a very good briefing, had no delays over the announcement and made a payment to all agencies involved in the creative pitch which showed their genuineness in entering the process. Congratulations should go to The Brand Agency and to Paul Yole on their win.”Curtin is estimated at between $3-4 million. More details will be added to this story when CB receives the press release.

Now that’s a big win!
Well done Brand.
OK. So we didn’t get it then. F#@*
Congratulations Brand, well done to everyone involved.
Congratulations Paul, Erin, Adam, Josh, Craig, Rikki, Warrick and everyone else at Brand who I imagine pitched in one way or another…or who stayed til 3am glueing pitch documents together 🙂 Very, very happy for you all.
Sheesh.
Id hate to be at Gatecrasher right about now.
Does that mean your agency wasn’t told 12.53?
That’s fucked.
I hope your job’s not on the line (if you’re a GC-er)
Just two sentences that you people must write a lot, but it always looks so heartless when you read it. As a client I feel for any agency that loses an account when they have put their heart and soul into the relationship. It’s a tough business. Good luck Gatecrasher and congratulations to the Brand agency.
yay brand
No, 2.16. Thanks for the concern but we were told. I was not involved but apparently the client did everything right.
Congratulations to The Brand on winning what was a hotly contested pitch. Anyone out there with a spare spot spare a thought, and clear a space for any of the GC crew who won’t be there after today. Hang in there guys, it will work out just fine.
well done The Brand, now let’s see the work and let’s hope that it was what won it on the day
less of a pitch, more of an election. the republicans won
I think it is important to point out that The Brand Agency’s status at the moment is “preferred tenderer”, until the contract is signed. Naturally, we expect these discussions to go well.
I’d also like to endorse John Driscoll’s comments in your story about how well this pitch was conducted. The client was incredibly professional and rigorous, and our competitors have been very gracious. Contrary to the view expressed by 5.59, it was not election and I shudder to think anyone would regard me as a Republican. (Maybe 5.59 meant to say “publican”?)
Recognition should also be given to the great work Gatecrasher has done over the last five years. The have given Curtin a valuable brand legacy that the new agency will now inherit. PY
Very gracious yourself Paul, but please tell us what happens to Curtin’s media spend now? Surely it’s not going to be handled by your media buying shop as they currently handle Murdoch University for Meerkats? As you know this is a very, very competitive business area.
There is slim chance that TBA can run the two accounts in Maxus independently and fairly. You only have to look at the way they transferred the former head of Maxus to TBA to realise that the priorities of the agency far outweigh Maxus. Any media opportunities are definitely going to head Curtin’s way in the future.
There’s zero chance Maxus would be allowed to work on the media. Gee, I hope they don’t just hive the planning off to a one man band. Wait…where’s that music coming from?
v. good point 3.25. it’s a hell of a conflict which means it has been thought of. maybe it’s staying with whoever GC used as this was a creative pitch.
Hopefully the winning idea is original?
I’ve been popping across to this blog over the past two weeks ever since a mate told me that you have great looking girls in agencies over there. I gotta say there’s a lot of backslapping and self-congratulations going on in the posts. Not at all like Lynchy’s bitchy CB site. One impression I have taken from my infrequent bird watching visits is that you guys HAVE to get your heads out of the surf and expose yourself to advertising in the real world. Or, at the very least, the rest of Australia.
All I know about Perth is that Andrew Tinning and Julian Watt are now there. Both are good hires, but it looks like you could do with a few more. What’s with all this copying of ideas in Perth? Everyone is defending this new RACV spot-motion film as coincidental. Maybe. But to do it twice on the same account? Come on!

It’s not listed on their website but who is the CD at The Brand Agency? Does he (she) just let any idea through? If I tried this shit my CD would kick my arse and I would be out of a job. Lift you game Perth.
Back to Lynchy’s blog I go.
Jesus! There’s no way Murdoch and Meerkats will put up with that. Especially as, with Caroline Hall now gone, Brand are trying to regain the RAC bit they lost to Meerkats.
Dear oh dear…not again.
Fiercely unoriginal.
Trust me, with Curtin on board Steve Harris doesn’t care about the 2% they make on the Murdoch revenue.
Let’s hope they’ve built alot of ‘youtube’ time into the creative development budget.
You are kidding!
Hey 5:17 it’s RAC over here mate!
Julian Watt is based in Sydney!
This is just a another frame up! There are no similarities at all !!!! (LOL)
The Brand CD’s are Craig Buchanan and Dale Simmonds. Both art directors. oh, hang on, so am I (LOL). Anyway I think they would be feeling pretty well kicked up the arse right now!
Thanks 5.17 – very enlightening. If I was at Brand i’d be pretty embarrassed. maybe that’s why none of them showed up to the B&W party last friday (please don’t tell me they were at home watching the olympics).
What this does show is that their briefs are very unoriginal. maybe the planners should be taking some of the heat.
Not a reflection on how good the AFA party was or wasn’t – but what does not going to an industry party reveal about someone other than they have a life outside of advertising?
There was 350 people at the party 8.49 so who cares how many Brand people were there. Anyway, hottie Danielle is in a couple of photos above and she can party for the whole agency 🙂
To the blogger who posted the following comment previously:
‘For example who would think that for the past two weeks we would be talking about The Brand Agency and their improved creativity. Through comments and stories you can tell that they are currently the major creative competition to Marketforce because they are being talked about so much.’
Feeling a bit silly are we?
8.49 – What do you mean no Brand people were at the party? There were at least 15 from my last count.
Personally im sick of all the Brand hatred going on here. Brand clearly had the best ideas out of the bunch and everyone else is just being nagging old biddies who take stabs because of their own failures. What ever happened to good sportsmanship?
Agreed, 11:55. There are sincere and hardworking people work at Brand, similarly at Gatecrasher and Marketforce. This hatred is doing nothing but encouraging people from outside WA laugh at us and making Perth people wonder just what the hell they have to do to get some credit for their hard work.
Can I just say that, aside from all the other bullshit going on in this ugly little conversation, that Danielle can indeed, party for the whole of the Brand Agency. Three cheers for the redheads!
Okay, I admit it 8.49 (if that IS your real name 🙂 ), I didn’t show up to the B&W party. Three kids and a long-suffering wife tends to slow down your social life every now and again. But hey, I promise I’ll put in a special appearance next time.
Sorry to hear about the layoffs at Gatecrasher, that’s never something you want to read about.
Thanks everyone for your comments but this thread has run it’s course. Let’s all move on.
