Boylen exits 6PR

6PR Operations Manager Martin Boylen (pictured) has been made redundant and left the business at short notice last week. It is understood Boylen was given less than 8 hours notice that he was being terminated.

The decision came shortly after station owner Macquarie Media Limited’s intermin results for the first six months of this financial year. The results showed that revenue across the company was down 9% but profit was up 175% due to cost savings from the joint venture merger of Fairfax Media’s radio assets and Macquarie Radio Network.

Boylen is a popular figure in the industry but it appears he has been a casualty of Macquarie’s cost-cutting drive, which is focusing on roles not directly related to sales or content production.

Commenting on the results, Executive Chairman Russell Tate said: “We continue to fine tune our operating structures and personnel, and we will realise further significant savings in operating costs.”

Boylen was at the helm of Fairfax Radio in WA when it owned both 6PR and 96fm, which went to #1 in 2012, knocking Mix 94.5 off top spot after 100 consecutive surveys. It repeated the effort in 2013.
