Block Branding launches the Anzac Star for the National Anzac Centre in Albany
Block Branding has revealed a commemorative symbol commissioned by the Western Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet for the National Anzac Centre — a new place of remembrance in Albany that is set to become a showpiece for the southwest city’s Anzac Centenary activities.
A nine-pointed star formed by a continuous, intertwined line is the basis of the ‘Anzac Star’; it represents the formation of a unified Anzac spirit forged through Australia’s and New Zealand’s joint effort and sacrifice as a combined army corps during the First World War.
“The star’s nine points represent New Zealand and the eight states and territories of Australia, two allied nations that created a lasting legacy of servicemen and women,” said Mark Braddock, Creative Director of Block Branding. “We used a continuous line to form the symbol, which speaks to the enduring nature of the Anzac story and the ongoing acknowledgement of the men and women who served our nation in World War I and helped forge our national identity.”
The symbol’s colour palette was largely drawn from the colours of the military battlefield: the uniforms; the cliffs of Gallipoli Cove and the waters of King George sound; the coastal saltbush and weathered granite of Albany, which was for many of the Anzacs, the last sight of Australia.
The centre, which is currently under construction, will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience an emotional connection with the men and women involved in the First World War. It will be a physical, interpretative and online experience that recognises the port city as the place of the first and second convoys’ departure for the war.
