Alan ‘Fatal’ Matthews is a legend of Perth media planning and buying. Over a thirty-plus year career, he has witnessed, if not been personally involved in, some of the most momentous changes in media in this state. Over that time he has built three of the town’s most significant independent media agencies – Merchant & Partners, Starcom, and Mitchell & Partners/Dentsu Aegis Network. The industry and his friends got together last night to bid a fond farewell to one of Perth’s most influential media figures.

Jeez, without mentioning names, some of the faces in these shots had me looking for traces of tar and feathers.
My enduring memory of Fatal is standing next to him in the slips when playing for the Channel 9 Allstars cricket team, Captained by Tony Kiernan. With Hollywood Rogers bowling left arm bar stool express off a long run up, Hollywood gets a straight swinger onto a solid edge, the nick flies directly to Fatal at second slip who did not get a hand anywhere near it before it whacked him fair in the middle of his forehead with a dull thud. Fatal hit the ground flat on his back like a felled Boab. The entire 9 team also hit the ground… in raucous laughter? Fatal has always lead from the front!
Fatal?
Wish I could’ve got down there, was stuck in branch meeting – catch up soon.
