AGDA WA: CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP WITH GAYE GODFREY-NICHOLLS – AUGUST 16

| | No Comments

As part of AGDA WA’s focus upon typography in 2008, you are invited to attend a creative workshop with award-winning calligrapher Gaye Godfrey-Nicholls.

Gaye’s primary school workbooks reveal an early interest in lettering, but it was upon first observing how a broad-edged pen transformed a friend’s handwriting that her interest in calligraphy was sparked and she began to develop her skills.

Studying calligraphy full-time revealed that a little knowledge can indeed be a dangerous thing. Ambitious, impatient and eagerly anticipating flourishes and elaborate illuminated capitals, Gaye discovered there was a lot of ‘unlearning’ to be done in order to perfect her technique, but soon learned to love the economy of form and simple clarity of the foundational hand.

Countless hours spent pencilling skeleton Roman letterforms taught Gaye the benefits of patience, dedication and discipline – the cornerstone of any successful calligraphic practice. From these beginnings, Gaye’s continuing interest in developing her skills saw her establish her own successful calligraphy practice Inklings Calligraphy in 1986.

She now shares her incredible skills with people of all ages from primary school students to retirees.
