2009 Michael Collins Caricature Award

West Aussies Danny Green, Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi and Commissioner of Police Karl O’Callaghan are among the subjects for the 2009 Michael Collins Caricature Awards, Australia’s richest such award.

This Friday, October 16, the Australian Arts community will turn to Western Australia to see the outcome.

The award honours the memory of Michael Collins, a highly respected andtalented member of the WA Arts Community. A postman who taught the artof caricature to thousands of adults and children, he passed away in2005. In recognition of his commitment to caricature, WA members ofthe Australian Cartoonist’s Association established the awardto promote the art of caricature.

This year the Michael Collins Caricature Award received 60 entries fromhighly decorated artists throughout Australia, all in the name ofhelping to raise funds for Australia’s leading heart health charity,the Heart Foundation.

With a first prize of $3,000, a runner up prize of $1,000, a digitalprize of $300 and a student prize of $300, Australia’s richest caricature award is now in its fourth year and is becoming known as theArchibald Prize to caricature artists.

Entries can then be viewed at Showcase Gallery Central TAFE, Aberdeen Street, Northbridge from Oct 17th to 24th October, 2-5pm.

All entries are up for auction on the online gallery to raise funds forthe Heart Foundation. Funds raised help fight heart, stroke and bloodvessel disease through research, education and patient support.
