Perth’s Double Barrel VFX works on new movie Dumplin’ starring Jennifer Aniston
Leederville-based Double Barrel VFX has completed visual effects work on soon to be released movie Dumplin’, starring Jennifer Aniston and Australian actress Danielle MacDonald.
Directed by Anne Fletcher with a script by Kristin Hahn, Dumplin’ is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Julie Murphy.
It tells the story of Willowdean – called Dumplin’ by her mother – the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, who signs up for her mom’s Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest. It soon escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionising the pageant and their small Texas town.
“We completed 45 vfx shots, including paint-outs, split-screens and 3D set additions,” said Double Barrel co-director Stuart Campbell. “It was a joy working with the film’s post team in LA. There is some amazing post and vfx talent in Perth. The challenge is attracting a consistent amount of high-end work to keep them here and continue growing the industry.”
Headed by Campbell and co-director Nathan Stone, Double Barrel VFX has racked up a number of feature credits in recent years.
Last year they completed 260 vfx shots for Nash Edgerton’s Gringo via Amazon Studios and earlier this year completed 110 shots on Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai, which recently had premieres at TIFF and the Adelaide Film Festival.
Dumplin’ will appear in select theatres in the US and be available for streaming on Netflix in the US and Australia from December 7.
