Community News scores photography win at 2018 News Media Awards; Strategy Director Guy Turner runner-up for Media Executive of the Year

Community News has won the award for best sports photographer (community) in the country at the 2018 News Media Awards in Sydney. The organisation, which runs twelve newspapers across Perth, was up for six awards at the event, held on Friday.

Community’s multi-award winning photographers were recognised once again across multiple categories. Andrew Ritchie scored three nominations in the Sports Photography of the Year (Community) category, with his outstanding ‘Cage Fighting’ snap taking the top prize. Ritchie was also highly commended for his photograph ‘Driver’.

Jon Hewson was highly commended by the judges in the News Photography of the Year (Community) category for ‘Mandurah Marina Lights’.

The Stirling Times was nominated for Community News Brand of the Year – the only West Australian newspaper nominated in either the community, regional, daily or weekend news Brand of the Year categories. The Stirling Times services the largest local government area (by population) in WA and the entry included coverage of the contentious ‘twin towers’ development on the Scarborough foreshore – an issue that the paper continues to cover at a level unmatched by other major media outlets.

Community’s local government election voter turnout campaign scored a nomination for Best Community or Social-Purpose Initiative (Open) and its partnership with SportsEdge, bringing unparalleled WAFL coverage through Footy Radio initiative both online and in print, was nominated for Innovation of the Year (Open).

Insights and Strategy Director Guy Turner (pictured) was runner-up for the Media Executive of the Year Award, having overseen a significant shift in the perception of Community News across the media landscape and playing a key role in a number of partnerships and collaborations since 2017.
