‘Only One’ music video sees Sandbox, Soundbyte and director Ben Young head to ARIA Awards
Up-and-coming director Ben Young, Sandbox’s Grady Habib and Soundbyte’s Brad Habib are heading to the ARIA Awards this week, where the Sandbox produced and post-produced clip Only One for John Butler Trio has been nominated for Best Music Video. It was directed by Young and co-produced by Sandbox and Marko Jovanovic. The video has already received numerous accolades, including Best Editing at the recent 2014 PADC Awards for Sandbox editor, Robert Woods.
The nomination for Only One makes Young the sole WA nominee amongst a handful of esteemed colleagues in the Best Music Video category. The award is publicly voted, so taking it out would be a win not only for him but also for the people of WA. It would be the first ARIA awarded to a video concepted and shot entirely in WA, by WA filmmakers, for a WA artist.
“It’s really a collective compliment to everyone involved – the band, the cast and crew,” said Young. “It’s awesome to see Western Australian artists recognised at a national level and I hope this nod changes the existing perception of having to go East to get a professional result”.
Young and John Butler put their heads together to develop unique concept, with the resulting video being more of a short film than a standard performance clip.
Butler praised Young’s work. “I had so much fun working with Ben on this video. He has such a great enthusiasm and a great work ethic. Ben also has loads of great ideas to pull from and is always ready to make the vision become a reality. Congrats Ben for your ARIA Nomination for Only One. It’s well deserved.”
Whilst the music video has nearly 1 million views on youtube, it’s not just the fans that appreciate the narrative and high production values of the clip. Numerous additional nominations and accolades are pouring in including:
• UK Film Festival 2014
• LA Indie Film Festival 2014
• Official Selection Los Angeles Music Video Festival 2014
• 2014 WAM Award Nominee for Best Music Video
• Warehouse Cinema Music Video Shortlist 2014
• Official Selection Studio City Film Festival 2014
Young has recently been awarded $750,000 in funding from ScreenWest’s West Coast Visions to create his first feature length film, Hounds of Love.
Young is represented by Sandbox for the production of music videos and by ZZ Productions for TVC and Corporate work.
