National and international accolades for Craig Kinder’s photography in independently produced cookbook Sarogini’s Sri Lanka Food

If one picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the impact of images that set thousands of tastebuds tingling. Such is the power of Craig Kinder’s stunning photography in the independently produced cookbook, Sarogini’s Sri Lanka Food.

Working with Sri Lankan master cook Sarogini Kamalanathan and fellow Perth residents Cally Browning (design) and journalist Norman Burns, Kinder’s photographs in the 188-page hardcover book have vividly brought to life the dazzling colours and textures of Sri Lankan life and cuisine.

His work has been recognised internationally, with the book winning Best Photography in an Australian cookbook in the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards and a Silver Medal in the New York-based Independent Publisher Book Awards (or IPPYs as they are better known) judged from over 5500 entries from the US, Canada and 33 other countries.

“It’s been a great journey to help produce this book ourselves under the Four Wallas Partnership, from going on the road in Sri Lanka and capturing the sights and spirit of the people to shooting the dishes in my North Perth studio,” said Kinder.

He and the other ‘Wallas’ are off to Beijing soon for the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards Finals, where Sarogini’s Sri Lanka Food will be up against cookbooks from 187 countries, competing for overall “best in the world” cookbook photography.

The IPPY Awards will be presented in New York on May 28.
