Matt Nankivell produces case study on GGF ‘Minute of Noise’ campaign that started as a student project and went global
Some 3 years ago as one of his commitments in Curtin University’s John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) programme, Matt Nankivell and a small team were tasked to partner with a charity and create a project to raise awareness and funds for their particular cause.
Nankivell’s group chose The Global Good Foundation, who deal with the rehabilitation of domestic violence victims. Through research they found that children were being heavily affected by this issue yet were rarely given a mention. They decided to give these kids a voice.
Nankivell was the creative/art director and project manager for the team, which developed the campaign up to a stage where they could hand over all elements to the Global Good Foundation in order for them to maintain and grow the ‘Minute of Noise’ to be the global campaign that it became.
“My vision was to create a participation-based awareness campaign that was so simple and transferable it could work no matter who you are, where you live, what level of education you have or even what language you speak; comparable to the likes of Earth Hour,” said Nankivell. “We wanted to create one united voice that sent the message out to all children that it’s okay to speak out about any issues they may be having at home, particularly in relation to domestic violence. So we created a ‘Minute of Noise’.”
The idea was conceived in late 2010/early 2011 and the programme was developed for 6 months. It was then handed over to the GGF half way through 2011 and started to roll out the actual events. Production company Lush TV came on board to film content to help kick-start the campaign. The first official large-scale Minute of Noise event ran at Mercedes College in September of 2011, and have continued to run ever since.
“My JCLA team was involved in the initial Mercedes event in terms of ‘on-the-ground’ work in order to get the ball rolling and help with the hand over. All events after that were run by GGF, which employed Tanya Dupagne to act as CEO of GGF and primarily manage the Minute of Noise campaign.”
Celebrities like Vanessa Amorosi, Rachel Beck, Anthony Callea, Paulini and Julie Goodwin began to endorse the campaign, as well as corporations taking on the ‘Minute of Noise’ challenge themselves, which ultimately drove the campaign to a global level in multiple countries around the world. All funds raised from the campaign are being used to fund educational camps for children affected by domestic violence, to give them the skills and confidence to get back out into the world and lead a normal and positive life.
Three years on and having raised awareness of the issue significantly, the Minute of Noise events have been scaled back in order for GGF to focus on developing and running educational camps for children affected by Domestic Violence, so Nankivell has taken the opportunity to package up the campaign to date with a video case study.

What a great story. Well done, Matt. That’s awesome.
Wow, this is really something.
It’s strong, and beautiful – great to see so much involvement, a difficult ask without any paid media. Keep it up Matt and the team, this is such a nice example of what this industry is capable of.
We need more people like you mate
