Cannes highlights: Camera shy women, a lousy off-road car and half a million protesting ants
The Cannes Festival of Creativity Film presentation on the final night of the festival contained some great work. Three of the gems in Campaign Brief’s eyes (outside of the obvious Film Grand Prix winners) were a delightful Dove spot out of Ogilvy London and two commercials out of BBDO’s German agencies.
The Dove “Camera Shy” film is handled brilliantly by agency and production company and shows women of all ages avoiding having their picture taken. It asks: “When did you stop thinking you’re beautiful?”
BBDO Germany’s smart fortwo was a Gold Lion winner in both Craft and Film categories. It shows the car in off-road environments where it fails every challenge before humorously making the point that the smart fortwo is as good off-road as an off roader is in the city.
500,000 ants were put to work in the third gem with BBDO Dusseldorf’s “Antvertising” spot for WWF. The commercial won the Cannes Grand Prix for Good, plus many laughs, on the night. Next to humans, leaf-cutter ants form the largest and most complex animal society on earth. But it took leaf-cutter ants 130 million years to finally turn their daily routine into a proven political medium – just in time for the 50th anniversary of the World Wide Fund of Nature.
