Lack of support for the PADC Festival of Ideas could make this year’s event the last
PADC President Andrew Tinning says the response to this year’s Festival of Ideas has been disappointing, and has issued this plea for more support for the event.
I won’t pull any punches, the response to this year’s Festival of Ideas registration has been underwhelming.
Every year, we endeavour to lure some of the regions leading creative minds to Perth. It’s not just about the judging (which we could quite easily do remotely), it’s about creating an opportunity for the local industry to be exposed to national and international talent of this calibre. Take it from me, you’re never ‘too old’ or ‘too experienced’ to learn something new.
I for one am looking forward to hearing from Reed Collins, a Perth boy who made the move to the USA and ended up being ranked as the world’s no.1 creative. Or Ralph Barnett who grew up in my old home town of Greymouth (you think Perth is isolated!). Ralphie was one of the masterminds behind the legendary Best Job in the World campaign. If an agency in Brisbane can produce work of that calibre, why can’t Perth? I find that inspiring and can’t wait to find out how they pulled it off.
This is a once a year opportunity that quite frankly might very well be the last if we don’t make the numbers this year.
The judges have invested a huge amount of time and effort into preparing their presentations and it will be embarrassing not only to the club but the local industry if they are greeted with a lack of interest as opposed to a show of respect.
This is an opportunity that’s not just limited to creatives. To all of you young (and old) suits and planners out there, creativity and passion for it is not just the domain of the creative department, everyone is responsible for the work. This is an opportunity for you to be equally inspired by some world class creative talent and share some of that inspiration with your clients.
It’s not too late to register. We’ll keep the door open until end of play this Friday, 2nd September. So c’mon – show your support, show your respect and show that you give a rats about creativity.
The 2011 Festival of Ideas is being held Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 11 & 12 at the Sebel, Mandurah.

Would love to attend for the day if it was here in Perth. But why drive down to Mandurah for it?
Yeah, that epic 45-minute drive is a real killer. Sheesh.
I think we’re sending about 10 people? Always worthwhile and best to get out of Perth so you can focus on the learning within a fresh environment. Come on everyone.
Let’s face it, the PADC has had its day. It’s overdue to join the Golden Keys and all the other irrelevant industry wank fests.
12.00pm.
Harsh. But you’re still in this thread aren’t you. And I’ll bet you’re at the next PADC Awards night. And I bet you’ll have a filthy opinion on who wins what. And I’ll bet you’ll pat backs and say ‘how good’s this!’…
amirite?
What the hell “half interested”??? It’s that attitude that makes Perth oh so crappy
Keen for this, but I’m a student, a super poor student.
I’m really disappointed that I can’t make it this year. I’ve been to three of these now and they’re amazing events. At Rotto I got to hear Eric from Singapore describe how he went about producing his best scams. And at Yanchep I got to shit can Justin Drape’s ideas while unknowingly sitting next to his wife. (I think she forgave me because we had a long discussion over dinner as to whether we believed in ghosts.) The talks are always interesting and you get to ask all those questions that pop into your head when you saw their work prior, online.
And 12:00pm; awards that are simply about awards, like the Golden Keys, should be left to die a natural death. But local shows such as the PADC’s have a much wider role. If they disappeared, we’d be all the poorer.
12:00pm
If it does die, it’s useless nay sayers like you who killed it.
I’m jealous, I’m not in Perth and I’d kill to go. It would be a shame, because the same people not going and having a whinge (about a 45 min drive Mandurah no less, my daily commute to my agency every day takes an hour and that’s not unusual!) will be the same ones later, once this is axed who claim that WA never gets anything good and that everything is in the Eastern States. Well you have something awesome right now, take advantage of it. C’mon people. Apparently Perth’s rep for apathy is well deserved.
Will be a big lost if it goes. Only event I walked away from last year in WA actually feeling inspired. Many events in Perth lately have been badly run with lame presentations. Only reason not going this year is my wife might not be too happy on cancelling our Honeymoon 🙂
Are agencies paying for their creatives to go?
I know 303 are paying 50% of the cost.
How does it work at other agencies?
