You’ll always find IKEA in the kitchen at parties

IKEA will launch a new integrated kitchen campaign on Sunday night that will also run during the new series of Masterchef. The television spot is imported from the UK and features the 1980’s hit Jona Lewie song “You’ll Always Find me in the Kitchen at Parties”.
The campaign runs in Perth and Adelaide from April to August and incorporates press, magazine, point of sale and signage that features a new kitchen finance offer from IKEA. The commercial was created by one of London’s hottest agencies, Mother, and shows people partying in four different IKEA kitchens to demonstrate the functional aspects of their design and durability. The soundtrack is performed by UK group Man Like Me and Jona Lewie makes a cameo in the commercial.
IKEA Marketing Manager Nigel Richardson said: “We’re lucky at IKEA to be able to use a mixture of international and locally produced adverts. When we saw this advert we couldn’t go past it for our planned kitchens campaign and our agency Meerkats supported this decision.”
Richardson said to extend the campaign they’ve built an upside down kitchen in the Perth store and visitors to IKEA can photograph themselves to recreate a scene from the commercial.
It’s not the first time IKEA in Perth has utilised great existing commercials created overseas. Over recent years “Dog”, “Start the Car”, “Women’s Garage” amongst others have all run on local stations.

Nice one Nigel. But in terms of cultural inappropriateness for the Adelaide and Perth markets, surely this ad is right up there with Midsommar?

So. Welcome to IKEA Kats. Is it everything you dreamed it would be? Back to the catalogue.
Brilliant.
8.58 – what on earth are you on about.
One to sing along to. Great cut through ikea.
Why is this being featured on a Perth advertising blog?-Nobody here had anything to do with it. What we’re all interested in seeing is the great work that Nigel and his new agency are producing locally. it’s been a long wait so far…
Ahhh I always knew the 80s would amount to something.
Jona Lewie… the Elliot Goblet of the music world
Gee, wouldn’t be refreshing if Meerkats actually came up with an original idea for IKEA?!
It’s not easy being green, Meerkats! Recycle away…
Is that Danny from the Brand in that spot?! LOL :-p
Nice ad. Up there with Start the Car so you can see why they decided to run it.
Meerkats can’t compete. We don’t have the budgets and there has been so many changes within the Ikea marketing dept so there is no direction to the agency.
MF messed it up and Meerkats look equally confused.
Oh so now everyone is starting to pick off Meerkats. First it was MF, now Meerkats, I guess jealousy is a curse… Grow up!
MF had one shot at a low budget catalogue campaign and they did a great job considering there was no marketing manager at IKEA to speak of and that when they finally did appoint one, he lasted a month!
Apparently it’s always been like this with them-limited local production and when you’ve got a great library of international work to choose from, who can blame them.
