TVW-7 won the week overall (0600-2400) for Total People with acommercial share of 41%, followed by NEW-10 with 32% and STW-9 with27%.
The top performing programme for the week against Total People wasTVW-7’s Packed to The Rafters which reached an average audience of261,000. Seven had eleven of the top fifteen programmes and theseincluded News, Today Tonight, Minute to Win It, Dancing with The Stars,World’s Strictest Parents and Better Homes and Gardens. Packed to TheRafters continues to remain in the top position against all our demos.Channel Sevens new series, Parenthood, launched on Tuesday, with anational audience of 1.15 million against Total People, and locally itmade the top fifteen programmes against all our demographics.
STW-9had four programmes in the top twenty against Total People. These wereMonday’s Two and Half Men, Hot in Cleveland, Top Gear and Two and HalfMen RPT. Hot in Cleveland is proving popular making the top fiveagainst People 25-54 and 35-54 and the top ten against People 18-39 and25-39.
NEW-10’s top programme for the week against Total People wasModern Family reaching 171,000 viewers, followed by Undercover Boss andTalkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation. The 4th episode of Rush recorded itssecond highest average audience (behind the launch episode) with justover 1 million viewers watching nationally and in Perth 142,000viewers. The programme seems to be gaining momentum with audiencegrowing rather than falling away. Rush is very popular against keydemographic People 25-54 claiming the number 1 spot for the secondconsecutive week.
Ten News at Five dominated the top six positions inthe daytime segment against Total People, followed by NEW-10’s SportsTonight and Saturday Night AFL: Round 20 – Adelaide vs West CoastEagles.
AUSTRALIAN FIRST
The Seven Network has announced an Australian first, 7 News SMSElection Alerts. People can now SMS their postcode to 0450 MYVOTE (0450698 683). Standard SMS rates apply. On election night Channel Sevenwill send regular alerts with the count in their local seat, plus thelatest in the contest between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott. Viewerscan register for results from up to 15 seats, and request an update atany time during the night.
ABC NEWSPAPER RESULTS
Six months to June, 2010. Major paper results were as follows:
- The Saturday edition of the Australian Financial Review droppedby 0.99% YOY and the Monday-Friday edition saw an increase of 0.94%.
- The Australian dropped by 0.99%.
- The Sunday Telegraph fell by 0.97% and The Daily Telegraph fell by 0.96%.
- The Sydney Morning Herald (Monday-Friday) slipped by 0.99%.
- The Melbourne Sunday Age decreased by 1.00%, The Saturday Age by 0.96% and Mon-Fri Age by 0.96%.
- The Sun Herald declined by 0.97%,
- The Brisbane Courier Mail Monday-Friday editions dropped by 0.99%and 0.96% on Saturday. The Sunday Mail also dropped by 0.93% YOY.
- Adelaide Sunday Mail fell by 0.98% and Monday-Friday editions by 0.96% and Saturday by 0.98%.
- The West Australian’s Monday – Friday editions increased by 1.03% and Saturday decreased by 0.97%
- The Sunday Times decreased by 0.95%.
ROY MORGAN MAGAZINE READERSHIP RESULTS
Sales of magazines were better than expected for the first six monthsof the year despite the threat from online, with total year on yearcirculation down 3.81%. Here are some highlights from the Audit Bureauof Circulations June 2010 report:
- ACP’s Australian Good Food saw an increase of 1.14%, Good Health& Medicine dropped by 0.98%. Delicious Magazine had an increaseof 1.03%
- Australian House and Garden increased by 1.09% and Burke’s Backyard by 1.06%.
- ACP’s Belle increased YOY by 1.15% and Australian Women’s Weekly also increased by 1.00%.
- Cleo decreased by 0.89% and Dolly dropped by 0.96%.
- Famous was up by 1.10% and New Idea increased by 1.00%. Woman’sDay saw a decrease of 0.98%. Other women’s magazines suffered losses -NW was down by 0.89%, Marie Claire down by 0.95% and Cosmopolitan downby 0.91%.
- Men’s lifestyle titles such as Alpha and Zoo Weekly sufferedlosses, however Men’s Health increased by 1.00% YOY. Modern Fishing wasdown by 0.96% and Wheels increased by 1.01%.
- Some business magazines saw increases with BRW up 1.06% and Moneymagazine up 1.00%. Australian Property Investor was up by 1.09%.
ONLINE ADVERTISING EXPENDITURE REPORT
PricewaterhouseCoopers’ IAB Australia’s Online AdvertisingExpenditure Report, has stated that total online expenditure hasreached the $2.0 billion mark. The report establishes the following:
- Year-on-year growth of 13% for online
- The suspicion that online video measurement is being under-reported
- General display ad expenditure rose 11%, driven predominantly byfinance, motor vehicles and computers and communications sectors.
- FMCG, retail, health and beauty, and insurance were the fastest growing industry sectors in general display.
- The classifieds market rose 9% to $470 million, driven predominantly by real estate, recruitment and automotive sectors.
- The search and directories market grew 16%, driven predominantly by Google
- There were several flaws in the current measurement systems,indicating that market leaders Google and Facebook did not contributefigures – Google’s figures were estimated for the report, whileFacebook’s were left out.
EYE
Eye is to about to conduct a study, via Neuro-Insight, across itsretail and airport offerings to measure emotional response to ads. Thefirst part of the survey will be measurement of their shopping centreswhich will start later this month.
