Simpson, Baker finalists for APG Planning Idol
The Brand Agency’s Meredith Simpson and 303’s Chris Baker have made the final of the 2009 APG Planning Idol competition.
Created to address a shortage of young, talented account planners – smartyoung people with a strategic brain, who can make a real difference tobrands and businesses – APG Planning Idol aims to find the hottest young strategist in Australia.
There were 34 entries from around Australia and 11 were shortlisted by the judges from the APG Committee: Jeremy Nicholas (BMF),Sudeep Gohil (Droga5), Mark Pollard (McCann Sydney), Kevin Macmillan (The Works), Debbie-Lynn Gibb (MJW Advertising), Frank Bethel (Host),Russ Mitchinson (DDB) and Simon Rich (Grey Melbourne).
For Stage 1 entrants had to submit a 1500 word paper demonstrating strategic thinking as to how they would position the issue of youth homelessness in Australia using communication.

Why is the APG resorting to such populist tactics? Clearly, Meredith’s eggs should be harvested, fertilised artificially by Baker and then implanted into account managers in every agency across town. Nine months later, the resulting brood could then be harvested, reared and nurtured by Derry Simpson before being educated at a special planners school where Paul Yole is headmaster and Ronnie Duncan is the teacher. After graduation, participating agencies could then choose the best two graduates. The rest could always spend a couple of extra weeks with Mike Edmonds before being sold off as copywriters-who-can-actually-write-copy.
Well done both of you and good luck with your presentations. Considering that Planning is still a relatively new discipline in WA, it’s great to have two finalists. PY
