WA consumers more confident: survey

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry says West Australians are more confident about the future of the economy. A survey of 400 people from metropolitan and regional WA showed consumer confidence has risen by 25 per cent from last quarter. Three-quarters of respondents believe the economy will rebound over the next year.

The chamber’s chief economist, John Nicolaou, says consumer confidence is key to boosting the state’s economy.

“There certainly has been a spike in confidence and that can only be good news to the extent that consumer attitudes, positive consumer attitudes, do lead to real economic outcomes,” he said.

Mr Nicolaou says consumer confidence is closely linked to economic recovery.

“There are very strong signs, both in terms of attitudes and also in terms of real economic conditions, that the worst of the global financial crisis might now be behind us,” he said.
