THEY DON’T GET RED ROOSTER IN THE USA

303 has launced a new campaign for Red Rooster that features Tom Gleeson. To show how Australian Red Rooster is 303 and Sauce Films went to New York and asked some questions of Americans. The spots were created by Malcolm MacLean and Ross Dungey and shot by Mark Zagar from Sauce Films.

Well done guys. Much better than anything else in the fast food category.
These have been shot well and must have been a challenge for Sauce to pull off but the idea of taking the piss out of ignorant Americans is as old as the hills outside of New York and done recently for one of the Aussie low carb beer brands by Saatchi Sydney for example. Nothing fresh here except maybe the chicken.
Haha, I really love these. Silly Americans!
Good work
It’s a national account so put it on the national CB blog. Go on, i dare you.
God, it makes me long for The Chaser. If you are going to use Gleeson’s shtick commercially then it has to be as amusing as he is on The Chaser. These aren’t. It always smacks of desperation to me when the only thing a brand can think of saying is “We’re Australian” – I’m not sure this works in these globalised times. Mind you American-bashing doesn’t ever seem to get tired.
Yep, while it’s nice to see something ‘different’ for a fast food chain, it’s also disappointing when the basic idea has been done before, much better.
Still, getting to go to New York is pretty cool, I’d gladly sacrifice a unique idea for a plane ticket…
And where are the Chaser boys anyway, a whole year without them on TV – has the ABC lost their minds?
Have a look at what happened when the Americans got on a plane and travelled the world doing vox pops for the recent Burger King Campaign. Fucking brilliant, and goes to show you can have a plane ticket and most probably a Lion or two to boot.
I am a small-minded petty provincial, bitter at my own failure to escape Dullsville so I thought I’d just pop on here and rip into everyone else’ work. Good to see there are so many of us around
Oh dear. Must we take ourselves so seriously? As a chicken lover and an industry punter, these ads get cut through and likely drive plenty of traffic to the stores, so what’s the problem people?
It’s OK. Not as bad as KFC or Hungry Jacks or, say, that Galleria spot.
Can we stop this reasoned debate and get back to putting the boot into Brand … that’s much more fun.
Tom Gleeson isn’t a member of the Chaser team (Julian Morrow, Dominic Knight, Charles Firth, Craig Reucassel, Chas Licciardello, Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen).
The spots are unremarkable. A trip to NYC for those involved appears to be the highlight.
Tom’s not on Chaser. You’re thinking of Charles Firth.
Everyone knows Tom’s not from Chaser, the point was that the Chaser team have been doing the ‘aren’t Americans stupid’ thing for years (with Charles Firth).
I would love to know if this actually works and sells more steroid-filled birds. Please post your research findings.
I agree with I Love Chicken. These do have cut through. However the media department have treated them the same as the normal $5.99 retail dross in the quest for media commissions. I saw the ad at least 6 times last night and it was already starting to annoy me towards the end. Hopefully, the agency has some funnier footage for variety.
Sorry 6.38am, 1.25pm obviously didn’t know.
Yeah, what about that ENJO book? I wonder if the Americans got it? Sounds like the public weren’t getting it over here!
I LOVE IT… 303 knows more about Americans than Saatchis
incase you’ve got no clue what i’m talking about:

Guys at 303…ignore any negative comments.. the campaign rocks…Lindsay rocks!
Hola from Syd.
2 tickets and a handy cam.
The ute / goat is pretty funny.
They should have asked those yankees them where we should invade Kentucky (FC) from, the north, east, west or south.
And show us on a map where the Enjo book is!
why is it that anytime someone posts an honest opinion about a piece of average work it is deemed negative and coming from desperate small minded Perthites wanting to escape dullsville? Average or below average work will attract the comments it deserves anywhere including Perth. Really good stuff will get the praise it deserves anywhere including Perth. Stop whining and accept that if you are prepared to put your balls on the line in the public arena.
“Ambush interviews” have been around much longer than Chaser. Norman Gunston was a master of it in the 70s. Jonathon Ross made a whole series of interviewing Yanks in the 90s called Fat Rich & Stupid. Even Michael Moore, a yank, makes his living with ambush interviews. And not to mention the Borat, Ali G and Bruno characters. This is a technique the 303 boys used, not the idea. The idea is to show that Red Rooster is the only Aussie fast food by going to the place where all the competitors come from. Duh! Well done 303!
I’m sorry but this is average at best. Where’s the consistency with previous advertising here? It’s not a new campaign surely because I saw the ad with the retro mum in the kitchen last night.
We saw it with HBF. Animated membership cards, the red head that did magic tricks and the beautifully directed ‘I like you’ ads. This is why 303 are loosing accounts because they are not consistent and are desperately lacking in strategy with their advertising.
Again I’m sorry but it IS average.
12:08, it’s not just Perth. The national CB site has the same level of cynicism.
Yes, that ENJO issue. Still hasn’t been resolved has it?
6:04 is on the money. Three ads, completely inconsistent with one another, bar the end graphic and a 2 sec sting. Why didn’t 303 build on the good work done with the original ads? They were at least refreshing and contemporary. I saw it starting to happen…then retro mum appeared, and now this rubbish. C’mon team, sort it out…
1.39pm – Don’t you think it is a worry when you have to say –
“The idea is to show that Red Rooster is the only Aussie fast food by going to the place where all the competitors come from. Duh! Well done 303!”
Its leaves the same stale taste as having to explain a ‘really funny’ joke to someone.
More importantly, it’s not “viral” until people send it on.
i think this ad is one of the most stupid ads i have seen for a while, not only is it racist but it lacks any of the humour that was seen in the original Charles Firth interviews on the chaser. Tom Gleeson and Red Rooster are merely jumping on the bandwagon and indulging in a stereotype that is false and unfounded. I don’t understand how they expect to sell chicken by trying to prove Americans are morons, because anyone who had a brain would know this to be false. I am not saying that America hasn’t made mistakes, or that there are certain citizens who aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, but to start an assault on it’s people merely for where they were born is completely uncalled for. This ad offends me, and trust me I have a very good sense of humour and a strong constitution, in my opinion it should never have aired on tv, and if i could have my way it would be removed completely.
“Americans just don’t get it” – well of course they wouldn’t know what Red Rooster is, but more to the point, why would we expect them to? The reason The Chaser’s vox popoli segments worked is because there was an irony in such (apparent) ignorance. That doesn’t exist here. Without irony, the joke falls flat, and becomes little better than a pot shot.
Don’t get me wrong, I get what you’re trying to do, but it doesn’t work. Sorry.
Brilliant 12:23, of course, it shows the stupidity of the interviewer not the interviewees.
Ask an Australian on the street what a box of Kringles is (box of mini hamburgers), doubt if they’d know. Or how many burgers on the menu at an In & Out Burger (3).
We watch American films, but we don’t know everything.
Thick Australian creatives who do real estate ads, just don’t get it.
This is great stuff 303.
Sloppy ads, unfunny. I’m ‘just’ a consumer. They show a picture of a kangaroo – the American says, “Is that a wallaby?”. Does anyone realise this is backwards? 90% of Americans would probably not even know what a wallaby is – if they saw that picture, they would say ‘kangaroo’. And the guy with the New York accent is faking it. So I’m pretty sure they staged those ads.
well i think this ad for red rooster is very offensive to me and the american people of course the americans dont get it they dont have red rooster there and i think to be honest australian dont get it how dare they pick at the americans and make them look like total morons i have been there and believe me they are not all thick as bricks and stupid there are stupid and thick people all over the world not just america get the bloody ad off its degrading and rude and we dont have california pizza kitchen here in australia so maybe the americans should do an ad on that here and say australians just dont get it if you have never been there you wouldnt know about it so scrap the ad and stop picking at the americans all the time and focus on something more funny and interesting……..
This is the most stupid piece of garbage I’ve seen on TV in a while. Despite being Australian, I’d love to see an American ad where a US citezen comes to Australia & asks them what a bald headed eagle is and when they stare blankly at him he just says “Typical Aussies no wonder they’re at the ass end of the earth and only good at sports which are played in 5 countries throughout the world”. I’m sure we’d laugh our ass off and wouldn’t find it offensive because we’ve got a great sense of humour…right ?? Yeah, when it suits us. Being patriotic doesn’t mean putting down other nations, some Australians don’t seem to realise this.
I’m an American married to an Australian. I have five kids. Last year I had to take them all out of their state school, because of bullying little Aussie Shits! Kept calling my girls even the youngest who was five years old American Bitches. Just today my eight year old comes home in tears, because some other little Aussie shit in their private school called her stupid and said all Americans were stupid just like the Red Rooster commercial. Well you may think it’s harmless, but I find it racist and offensive.
For the record I enrolled my kids in school in the US three years ago for a half a year. They were never bullied once. All the kids were fascinated by their Aussie accents.
What does this say about all you racist Australians. I’m sure Americans would find it interesting what all of you think of us. Maybe then we wouldn’t have to put up with so many of you on American TV shows!
