It’s official – w/c November 30 was week 1 of the summer season. Quitea few new programmes premiered as well as many staged a return.
TVW-7 introduced Seven Wonders Of The Industrial World (163,000viewers), Holby Blue (123,000 viewers), Eli Stone (107,000 viewers) andBritannia High (80,000 viewers). Returning shows were Dirty Sexy Money,Las Vegas and Hot Property.
STW-9 introduced The Big Bang Theory, Gossip Girl and AustralianGeographic. They reintroduced Movies to both Sunday and Tuesday nightsand brought back The Fringe, the New Adventures of Old Christine DeadlySurf, ER, Police Ten 7, The Closer, Cold Case and Sudden Impact.
On NEW-10, new offerings included the Ex-List, Army Wives, Big CatDiary and In Plain Sight. On the comeback trail were Don’t Forget TheLyrics (delivering an audience of 92,000 on Sunday and 95,000 onThursday) How To Look Good Naked, Rules of Engagement and Numb3rs.
TVW-7’s commercial share overall (0600-2400) for w/c November 30 was39.5%, followed by STW-9 with 31.1% and NEW-10 with 29.4%. TVW-7 hadeleven of the top fifteen programmes, with their top performingprogrammes for Total People being News, Today Tonight, Seven Wonders OfThe Industrial World, The Outdoor Room With Jamie Durie, Hot Property,The Rich List and Better Homes And Gardens.
STW-9 had two programmes in the top fifteen with CSI: Crime SceneInvestigation and Monday Night’s Two And A Half Men. The season finaleof The Chopping Block saw a decrease in audience of 7.0% from theprevious week, whilst the return of Fringe had an audience increase of36.6% from the last episode in w/c 12th of October.
NEW-10 was also able to get two programmes into the top fifteen withboth episodes of NCIS performing well. Tuesday night’s special Britney:For The Record captured an audience of 108,000 people. Ten News At Fivealso continued to dominate daytime programming taking out the top sixspots for the week.
The second week of summer programming saw TVW-7 increase its share upto 41.7%, followed by STW-9 with 31.8% and NEW-10 with 26.5%. TVW-7 hadthe regular programmes in the top fifteen with News, Today Tonight, HotProperty, Better Homes And Gardens, Air Crash Investigations, The RichList, How I Met Your Mother, and the 2008 RAC Channel Seven ChristmasPageant. STW-9 also had on programme in the top fifteen with The BigBang Theory, whilst NEW-10 had NCIS make the list.
DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDING
This is a very competitive area with the Seven Network’s TiVo andFoxtel IQ making the most noise about their respective products.According to research by Merrill Lunch the market looks as follows:

Survey #8, 2008 results were released last week and the following is a snap shot of the Eastern States markets.
Sydney
• 2GB continued its strong form to remain the number one station for People 10+ despite a share decrease of 0.7%, down to 12.3%.
• 2Day FM increased share by % for People 10+, to drop to return tothird overtaking ABC702. This is all despite a decrease in People 10-17of 4.5%.
• Triple M increased share by 0.2% to 4.6%, and saw increases across all demographics except for People 10-17 and GBs.
• Nova 96.9 posted a loss of 0.8% to 8.2%, with a major share drop of 4.4% for People 18-24.
• Vega 95.3 increased share by 1.0% up to 5.5% with increases across all demographics except People 55+.
• Mix 106.5 increased share by 0.2%; their strongest gain was People 25-39 with an increase of 2.7%.
• WSFM jumped 0.2% to 8.2%, increasing share against People 10-17 and 18-24 with 2.4% and 1.7% respectively.
Melbourne
• Fox FM increased its lead on the top position for People 10+, with ashare increase of 1.0% up to 15.6%. This is despite a loss of 3.3% forPeople 10-17 and 1.1% for People 18-24.
• 3AW increased share to 14.4%, with increases across all demographics except for People 18-24 which saw a loss of 2.0%.
• Triple M slid another 0.9 points to 5.0%, despite an increase of 7.8% for People 10-17.
• Nova 100 regained 0.6% for People 10+, backed by an increase of 4.1% for People 18-24.
• Vega 91.5 lost a further 0.1%, but saw an increase of 2.0% for People18-24, to regain a little bit of the 3.4% they lost two surveys ago.
• Gold FM gained 1.3% for People 10+ up to 7.3% and increases of 2.5% and 2.2% for People 18-24 and 40-54 respectively.
• Mix 101.1 FM saw a decrease of 0.1% to 5.5%, with losses across all demos except People 55+.
Brisbane
• Nova 106.9 increased its lead by 1.1%, for People 10+ up to 14.9%,but lost another 7.2% for People 10-17. This totals a loss of 12.7% forPeople 10-17 over the last two surveys.
• Triple M slid a further 0.5% for People 10+, down to 10.9%. The most significant loss was a decrease of 2.3% for People 25-39.
• Talkback station 4BC had the greatest gain with an increase of 3.0%up to 9.4% for People 10+. This was spurred on by an increase of 8.4%for People 55+ to claim the top position.
• 4KQ lost 1.2%, down from
7.0% to 5.8%. The greatest loss was 4.2% for People 40-54.
• 97.3 FM lost share by 0.2% for People 10+, down to 10.8%, but remainin fourth position, their greatest loss was 3.5% for People 18-24.
• B105 saw a decrease in share by 1.0% to 13.0% and are still outrightin the number two position for People 10+. Despite a decrease of 3.0%for People 10-17 they remain in the number one position for thisdemographic.
Adelaide
• 5AA remained in the number one position for People 10+ despite ashare decrease of 1.8%. The station had a loss of 3.1% for People 55+.
• Nova 91.9 increased share by a further 2.2% up to 12.1%. This wasdriven by significant increases against People 10-17 (up 6.4%) and18-24 (up 12.1%).
• Triple M lost 0.8% down to 9.5%. They lost a further 4.9% for People25-39 bringing the total decrease to 7.8% over the last two surveys.
• SAFM lost 0.3% down to 12.5%, and remains the number three stationfor People 10+. They lost their number one position for People 18-24with a massive decrease of 4.4% for the demographic.
• Mix 102.3 decreased by 0.5% to 12.7%, and remains the number onestation for People 40-54 despite a loss of 2.0% for this demographic.
FIRST AUSTRALIAN DIGITAL RADIO NETWORK
The Austereo Group has launched what they claim is Australia’s firstnational digital network and first commercial digital station, RadarRadio. The playlist is exclusively undiscovered artists, with a focuson Australian bands. To listen in, the station is available onradarradio.com.au and is looking at being launched on the DAB+ digitalspectrum next year, once digital radio is introduced in Australia.
BUCHANAN GROUP SUPERMARKET SURVEY
This survey was based on interviews of 800 people. Top line results were as follows:
• 60% of people are switching to supermarkets’ home brands
• 79% of people are fearful of the recession and the impact it will have on their finances
• Two thirds say value is more important than price and brand name
• .37% were interested in finding out about new products on the shelf
• 81% said they preferred advertising that delivered straightforward facts and information
