MARKETFORCE YOUNG GUNS WIN $20,000 AUSTEREO RADIO WRITERS AWARD
Marketforce’s Ryan Albuino and Andrew Chu have won the 2008 Austereo Radio Writers Award and picked up the $20,000 cash prize.
Austereo WA Sales Director Martin Whittle made the announcement at a special presentation at the Matilda Bay restaurant. Albuino and Chu (pictured left with Austereo general manager Linda Wayman) won the award with a commercial titled ‘Weather’ for Lotterywest’s Scratch ‘n’ Win Double Crossword ticket. The track was produced by Julian Douglas-Smith at Soundbyte Studios and was a monthly finalist from March this year. As part of the prize, Lotterywest receives $20,000 worth of value-added across MIX 94.5 and 92.9.
In one of the most dominant performances in the 14 year history of the competition, six of the top ten tracks were written by Albuino, four of them jointly with Chu at Marketforce and two solo when he was at Rare Creative Thinking in 2007.
In no particular order the top ten were:
• St John Ambulance ‘24 year old male’ by Ryan Albuino (Rare Creative Thinking)
• St John Ambulance ‘20 year old female’ by Ryan Albuino (Rare Creative Thinking)
• Dept of Premier & Cabinet ‘Hoon’ by Ryan Albuino & Andrew Chu (Marketforce)
• Lotterywest (Scratch n win) ‘Weather’ by Ryan Albuino & Andrew Chu (Marketforce)
• RAC (Batteries) ‘The sound of silence’ by Kurt Beaudoin (The Brand Agency)
• Health Dept (Quit) ‘How old’ by Malcolm McLean (303)
• Office of Road Safety ‘12 points of Xmas’ by Ryan Albuino & Andrew Chu (Marketforce)
• Stockland ‘50 hot homes’ by Mike Edmonds (Meerkats)
• Lotterywest (Scratch n Win) ‘Ladies & Gents by Ryan Albuino & Andrew Chu (Marketforce)
• Health Dept (Chlamydia) ‘Piece of Piss’ by Adam Barker (Gatecrasher)
The finalists were judged by Colman Rasic Carrasco Sydney creative director Dejan Rasic, Australia’s representative on the Radio jury at Cannes this year; Clemenger BBDO Melbourne senior writer Paul Reardon, winner of the last two national Sirens awards and Australia’s first Grand Prix winner at Cannes last year with Snickers ‘Hoedown’; and Rowan Chanen, Regional creative director Y&R Asia, also a Cannes juror this year.
This is the fourteenth year the cash prize has been presented, and the 2009 competition is already underway making it 15 fantastic years for Australia’s richest creative cash prize.

Well done lads. I know how hard you’ve both worked this year and nobody deserves this more than you two. You’re a couple of legends, now where are you taking me to lunch?

Phew, there’s some writing talent in that first photo on the second row!
A few weeks back there was a bit of a debate about the Perth trend for art directors to work on radio concepts. Could be entertaining to start it up again? Or at least let’s wheel out a couple of jokes?
Q. How many art directors does it take to change a light bulb?
A. “Does it have to be a light bulb?”
Here’s the original post from Old Writer:
Dear CB. You have helped with the Radio Writers’ awards for a long time so please look back in your files and tell us if there has ever been a year where so many art directors have been credited on radio finalists for this award.
11.18 has a good point. Maybe it’s changed now but in my day the recording studio, apart from the library, was the one art director free haven we could escape to.
Did Lori Canolini ever get his name on any of Adam’s work? Did Ray feel the need get his name on Lindsay’s stuff? Dale on Mike’s? Craig on Peter’s? Did Ric Cairns ever have a FCB Shorter art director down on his stuff? Did Wayno feel it necessary to hold Steve Browning’s hand?
Surely an art director’s time is better spent on the time consuming job of crafting the print, the tv, or even down the pub, rather than fetching the coffee at Brainstorm?
Kids today.
11.51 are you suggesting that Ryan and Chewy ripped this clip off ?????
Jesus finding some connection between that old blokes routine and their winning radio spot really is getting desperate to try and dig up something to undermine their work.
Why don’t you spit out the lemon your sucking on and try-“well done guys, it’s a really good campaign”
C’mon, it won’t hurt.
Andrew Tinning.
Andrew. Chill Mate. It’s only an anonymous blog…
The comment was ironic. As if anyone would have ever heard of Stanley Unwin.
Let alone rip him off.
Well done guys, it’s a really good campaign.
Would have been nice to see it up against the fantastic Perth Zoo stuff though.
Best radio of the year by a country mile
12.46, the way I see it is if you come up with a campaign as a team, the team gets credit for all the work even if this award only recognizes the radio executions.
Maybe the reason Adam, Lindsay, Mike, Steve and Ric didn’t put their ADs name’s on them was because they are all a pack of c**ts! (But maybe not, they are all good blokes, no really, they are)
Maximost congrat you Asians in the well dunny mold.
-S. Unwin.
Why did you bring your dad Mitch?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Tamara, for making me a wonderful coffee this morning. The client was also impressed with hers. She did however note that there were too few Tim Tams on the plate.
Before there is a radio ad, there is an idea. Or their should be. The art directors I work with have ideas. Some of them are actually quite literate too. Besides, radio can be the most visual medium there is.
“Or their should be”. Really, Dav. Looks like you might need an art director just to correct your grammar.
Amazing performance ‘6 Pack’ Ryan. Some bragging rights in your house now? Well done. BTW Dav is absolutely right – why can’t a creative team work as a team on radio as well as other media? Let’s see radio storyboards I say. PY
Right as this story is currently top of the blog, I’ll post here. This local blog has got really nasty of late. At least the national anonymous bloggers do it with some wit and charm. Here, we just seem to be trying to stir up shit about each other’s business. It’s not funny (except sympathy fuck) and its certainly not clever. I don’t think I’ll post anything locally until everyone has to sign their names to their posts. I don’t want to be associated for the unpleasant and sniping posts of other Anonymous people. That is all.
a few moody beers at 303 last night 8pm? dont worry we all have bad weeks. it’s probably our turn next week. i disagree with your view though, as there have been some very funny and clever comments here on the wa blog.
8.00 pm. That would have been the perfect opportunity for you sign your name and to lead by example. But you didn’t. So i will continue to anonymously blog.
Well done Ryan and Andrew
I’m with you 8.54 and 11.20
And yes AT, you need to chill out a bit after that comment. For the record “Well done Ryan and Andrew”. The reason I didn’t do this before is I thought saying it to them face-to-face at Matilda Bay was better.
What do you mean ‘not funny’, 8.00pm? 2.25’s comment is one of the best.
What a day was had by all, it’s just a shame that you weren’t true to the radio theme and leave the camera at home. Some great visages for the airwaves there.
Well spotted 3:39. However, the comment was posted by my secretary who was taking a dictation. You just can’t get the staff.
If you happen to be sitting next to 8.00pm, lean over and give them a big hug from all of us.
Congrats lads. I were well impezzed by howl things, tut boys did reel well and i thing if you wanna bicker we shuld create a new pagee http://www.campaignbrief/wa/whogivesafuck.com.
