IKEA_Xmas_Glasses_2.jpgIn a good all round performance three West Australian agencies share 11 finalists at the 2008 AWARD Awards, considered Australasia’s premier creative awards show. The Brand Agency and Marketforce each have 4 finalists and 303 has 3 finalists.

Radio was the dominant category for Perth with 8 of the 11 finalists coming from this category. The Brand Agency’s finalists (3 singles and a campaign) were all for their ‘Find your Animal’ radio campaign for Perth Zoo. Listen to ‘Black Hat’, ‘Lil Penguin’ and ‘Otter’.

Marketforce had 3 radio finalists for their Lotterywest Scratch n’ Win ‘More Words” campaign (2 singles and a copywriting finalist). Their other finalist was in Posters and Outdoor for Network 10 ‘Big Brother – Being Watched’

303 also had a radio finalist with the Royal Life Saving ‘Kid’s Perspective’. They also pulled of a big coup with two finalists in the tough Television & Cinema category. IKEA’s “I saw this and thought of you – Glasses” was one of just 4 finalisits in the less than 30sec category and in fact was the only finalist from Australia and New Zealand with the other coming from Thailand and Japan. It should also be noted that it was one of only two Australian finalists in the 30sec and less than 30sec categories. In total only 9 spots were finalists in thesecategories and 6 of them were from Thailand.

The IKEA “I saw this and thought of you’ campaign isalso the only finalist in the less than 30sec campaign category.

Overall Colenso BBDO Auckland and Lowe Rivet Sydney lead the shortlist, which has a total of 350 finalists this year. 75 Judges gave up their time to judge more than 3,500 entries over an intense two week period. AWARD recorded the highest number of entries to date. In comparison to the previous year, entries increased by over 20%.

Australian finalist numbers are up by 24 compared to 2007, with a total of 181 finalists. New Zealand has a total of 76, down by 26 from last year and Asia counts 91 finalists this year, 9 less than the previous year. The overall finalist number dropped by 11 compared to 2007.

Says Droga5 Australia creative chairman David Nobay, this year’s Chairman of Judges: “Admittedly, we have to look beyond our own small world for creative inspiration, but nevertheless, the 350 finalists this year deserve our attention and, if nothing else, our respect for a job well done in a climate where the credit crunch is fast becoming the creative crunch for so many clients throughout the region. Hopefully, our winners will act as reminder that, in tough times, big ideas punch harder than big budgets.”
