PADC AWARDS JUDGING THIS FRIDAY
UPDATE TO THIS STORY: Campaign Brief originally wrote this story believing the new IKEA ‘Storage’ print ad had not made the awards entry deadline. This is not the case as the ad appeared in the Mandurah Mail on Thursday July, 31st – the final day for PADC qualification. While obviously not in the running for The West Australian Fellowship, this ad from 303 (shown below) is bound to catch the judging panel’s eye.
The PADC Call for Entries closed today and judging for the annual awards show happens later in the week when the jury gets together to deliberate on the expected 500+ entries.
This year the PADC has pulled off a great coup getting one of the world’s most respected creatives to head the jury. Nick Worthington is ECD at Colenso BBDO Auckland and previously worked at BBH and AMV BBDO in London where he created some of the UK’s most celebrated advertising – including Levi’s ‘Creek’, Levi’s ‘Drugstore’ and the Road Safety ‘Two Things at Once’ campaign. Worthington has won an amazing 12 Gild Lions at Cannes and 11 D&AD Pencils amongst his numerous award list.
Also joining Worthington on the jury is Fabio Buresti, Strategic Planner at Droga5 Sydney, Rebecca Carrasco, ECD at Colman, Rasic, Carrasco Sydney, Craig “Moose” Moore, CD at One For All, Sydney and Nick Cummins, Creative Director at Sputnik in Melbourne.
All five judges will also take part in the Festival of Ideas creative weekend on Rottnest Island on Saturday and Sunday following the judging.
This year’s awards is bound to be an open affair and very competitive between agencies. CB has not looked into this deeply, but work from Perth’s three largest agencies that we think has got a good chance of getting up includes:
From Marketforce: ORS ‘X-Ray’ campaign; ORS ‘Mates Motel’ campaign; Department of Conservation ‘Applauding Adshel’; and The West Caxton Competition winning Crimestoppers ‘Think you have seen something’ ad.
From 303: IKEA Christmas ‘I saw this…” tv campaign (Glasses, Swivel Chair, TV Cabinet), IKEA ‘Hearing Test’ radio; Aroma Cafe ‘Coffee Stain’ and ORS ‘Flash’ tv
From The Brand Agency: RAC ‘Contents’ television; Perth Zoo ‘Find your Animal’ radio campaign.
As we said this is only a few of the ads and campaigns that stuck in our mind over the past 12 months. There is bound to be other nice work that we have overlooked.
What do you think? We’d love to be reminded of anything we have missed.

Wow, that is a coup to get Nick Worthington. That Drugstore commercial is a classic.
CB what have you got against 303???
Surely IKEA’s new TV campaign and the great storage print ad are worthy of mention. HBF is also great work.
CB and Marketforce – get a room.
A bit harsh 12:22.
I think you will find the new IKEA work, both TV and print, ran after the qualifying date for this year’s awards. They will both be good nominations for next year’s PADCs.
Can’t comment on HBF as I am not sure which spot you are referring to.
12.22. Maybe because it hasn’t made the deadline. Duh!
The seatbelt campaign will clean up!!!
Yes I think the ORS campaign will clean up too. I would also like to put in a good word for the REIWA radio campaign from TBA.
Pretty good list of contenders CB. Best of show for me is the ORS xray.
TV is going to be interesting. IKEA looks good but RAC and the ORS spot might give it a run for its money.
I’d love to know what Gatecrasher, Rare and Meerkats have got in that they think will have a chance.
Meerkats won’t win a thing as they don’t enter any creative awards apart from Cannes. Rare always have one or two contenders. Not sure about Gatecrasher but I doubt they have much to offer this year.
Anyone know if there’s a decent turnout expected at Rottnest this weekend? apparently only 50 tickets.
The seatbelt campaign should clean up and it should take out the west fellowship as well. If it doesn’t, there’ll be a few questions asked I’m sure. Prob here is that all of the really world class work will be competing against its self in the public service category. I can’t think of any great tv, mag, non public service press work so let’s hope the jury sees it for what it is, otherwise it will be a pretty thin book at the end of the evening.
12.46 get a life! or maybe a better job.
Drew and co’s keep ’em apart for Medallia has to be in with a chance. Lovely topical work and let’s face it, outside of public service, press will be pretty thin.
There’s a pretty big bunch of Brand people heading over 4:23. Dunno if that’s a good thing for you or not…
AT,
“Medallia”? Who’s steel the one on your mind???
What about the underwear stuff from Adimpact?
I think the latest ikea tv campaign is lovely. It’s a big worldwide brand so there must be some great work produced this year in other countries. Or so I thought. But searching bestadsontv and adsoftheworld I think Perth’s ikea work stacks up very well, so well done Rob & 303.
In amongst the Ikea commercials I also found this nice RAC ad out of Portugal.
http://www.bestadsontv.com/ad_details.php?id=3906
Very funny 10.12. Now that you mention it, the RAC commercial does look rather like an ad for Ikea or Freedom.
Im a fan of the underwear stuff from Adimpact – 8:55, they really are stepping up there game!!
Sorry 8.55 and 12.30. I want to like the Adimpact stuff but I’m afraid it falls flat. It’s missing the mark somewhere. It’s too overworked and over thought. These judges will see that.
Yeah, 8.55 and 12.30pm that Adimpact underwear stuff from Adimpact is really really really good. I think it’s the best thing they’ve done since that other stuff that was quite good. It’s a definite thumbs up for that underwear stuff from Adimpact from me. They are really stepping up there game, if not there speling
Love your sense of humour 10.12am and 5.14pm!
But I have to agree with the 5th grader that Ad Impact has improved a lot over the past few years. Just the fact that they are now getting the odd ad up in award shows is a good achievement for the agency.
303’s Ikea print is bound to pick up and it could be a shoot out between this ad and the Xray campaign for top honours.
There has not been much comment on what Gatecrasher, Meerkats or Rare have in this year. Does anyone know?
Mandurah Mail????!!!!!!
Yes CB, the ikea ad is a real winner!
5.14. Nothing to enter? Again.
Mandurah. That’d be my first place to put an Ikea ad considering it’s only about 80km away as the crow flies.
9.24am Stop reading this blog and educate yourself in real estate. Start with the Perth Now article here (http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,23083005-5013244,00.html) which states “MANDURAH is the most expensive city in Australia – and now the coastal commuter town 74km south of Perth is right up there with Los Angeles as the sixth most expensive place to live in the world.” It is a boom town for property development and all those new houses need kitchens and bedrooms. Any advertiser – or media buyer – who ignores peripheral markets like this does so at their peril.
10.46 You make a fair point but let’s be honest here, the real point in this case is any award enterer who ignores the cut off date does so at their own peril.
9.24
10:46… Wouldn’t one insertion in the West cover all these markets in a more cost effective way rather than placing multiple execution in lots of Community newspapers? But wait, hang on a sec, I didn’t see an execution in my community paper and I live in a relatively good area, only 10 minutes drive from Osborne Park. There must be some mistake?
Mandurah – Bogan capital of WA. Their idea of good design is the new 4 Stacker Whopper.
Give us a break 9.24. You are obviously a 303 staffer but this rationale you throw in our faces is absolute rubbish and you know it. “Any advertiser – or media buyer – who ignores peripheral markets like this does so at their peril.” PLEASE!
I think it’s great that you got this ad up. Good for you and I hope it wins you a few awards, but don’t give us this horse shit justification. Every agency in town got a great deal from Les to run their concepts in the West. The fact that you didn’t, and chose the Mandurah rag instead, says a lot. Of course if you did pay for the ads to run then it’s also a bit of a slap in the face to Les who puts his heart and soul into this competition.
Maybe I’ll ask Benny next time I see her.
10.46 that has to be the funniest thing I have read on this blog!!
anyone know how much 2 pages in the mandurah mail costs?
Righteous indignation. Don’t you just love it?
You’re right 11.54 it should definitely have run it in The West.. Surprised the guys didn’t as they offered us a great deal on our ad but the client went cold on it (bless them). Mind you I’m glad it missed the West as it would have probably won the fellowship.
In all this hysteria I’d like to get back to the point of the CB article and put in the Road Safety “Motels” as a bit of a sleeper to do well in print. And in the TV category a nomination for Murdoch Uni ‘Discoverers” from Meerkats.
I wouldn’t call a campaign that got several finalists at Cannes a ‘sleeper’. Although the Murdoch Discoverers spot turns me into a sleeper.
Forget PADC, it looks like 303 have a Media Lion coming their way. 10:46, that is my favourite CB post of all time.
On another note, well done everyone on a really strong year in print. And it looks like Perth has finally discovered art direction.
Yeh I know preriferal markets coz I live in Mandurah. Yeh we’re up there with Los Angeles you know, like, real fucken pricey eh. Yeh we need a new kitchen coz Jez burnt ours out spotten hash the uva night. We’re not gonna go to Ikea coz we can’t afford the fucken juice so we’ll just get a new one from the knock down job up the road. That’s all for now, I’m off to get one of them fucken 4 stacker fucken whoppers, those fuckers are choice eh. There pretty cheap for the 6th most expensive town in the whole fucken world. Whoo, fuck, I feel like a fucken millionare.
I think you’re all over rating the Wardrobe ad a tad, if you read the comments on best ads the judges said it was the best of an average bunch that week. They stopped giving out media lions for that kind of thing years ago. Can one of the chaps at 303 come clean and tell us if it actually appeared before the PADC cut off date? There seems to be much speculation surrounding this. As for Mandurah-home of the ‘Whopper Mullet with extra cheese.’
I’d like to take a little break from all the good natured banter and focus on the quality of the judges. We really do have a great panel this year. Nick Worthington for one is an absolute legend and one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. I’m not sure you realise how lucky we are to have someone of his calibre evaluating our work. Let’s hope that he and the others walk away from the experience with an overall good taste in their mouths as opposed to a fleeting impression made by just a few sweet bits and pieces.
I enjoy the irony of people from Perth claiming Mandurah is bogan. Let’s hope no one from over east is reading this embarrassing small-minded parochial little thread.
Hangover 6.48am? This thread is filled with discussion, good-natured banter and some quite funny observations. And the story is all about the PADCs – unless you were from Perth why would you even bother to read it, let alone click on the comments?
Oh, and every one of us would love to have a beach house in Mandurah.
Very quiet today on this thread so wrapping up:
The Mandurah Mail has had more publicity (and agency bookings) than it has ever has – Les Corner has every right to be totally pissed off at 303 – Road safety xray will clean up – Mandurah is big on Whoppers and second cousins – Andrew Tinning is in love with Nick Worthington (as I am after seeing his work) – and we have an Ikea scam ad that will also clean up at the PADC (love to hear Lindsay ‘no scam’ Medalia’s reasoning on that).
And CB is making a fortune off all of us revisiting the site. Good job all round guys. Next.
10.54. A scam ad, by definition, is one that runs without implicit client awareness or support. What are you suggesting?
6:52, I know no one’s probably reading this thread any more, however, for the record, I just wanted to point out that my comment about the Media Lion was sarcastic. But I do appreciate your earnestness.
